Getting a Job With Only an IITM BS Degree (Standalone Students)

Students with only the IITM BS do get jobs, but the official data about them is thin. The Batch 2025 Summary had 110 standalone students out of 545, and it does not report their jobs or salaries separately. The placement cell helps with jobs only after you finish the BSc level. So a standalone student needs a plan from the Diploma level onwards: projects, internships, and then the apprenticeship or GATE. If you are still deciding whether to study standalone at all, read standalone or alongside college first.

What the official data says about standalone students

The Batch 2025 Summary covers Data Science students who finished the BSc level (114 credits) during 2024.

What the summary does not do is show jobs, salaries or further study for the standalone group on its own. The status tables mix everyone together. So no official standalone placement rate exists. Treat any such rate you see online with care.

Other official numbers give a little context:

• The Batch 2024 Summary had 33 standalone students out of 131, again without separate outcomes.
• The Program Report of September 2025 counted 376 standalone learners at the Degree level.
• The Career Choices survey does not split its job counts by standalone and dual degree students either.

What you do not have, and what you do

A dual degree student has a second college, with its own placement cell and network. The Career Choices Report says many students find jobs and internships on their own, through their colleges and networks. As a standalone student, you do not have that second route.

What you do have:

• The IITM placement cell (IIC) for internships after one diploma, and for jobs after a BSc. You also need a paid plan, training and a passed assessment. See how the placement cell works.
• The BS level apprenticeship in Data Science, with up to 12 credits for 8 months.
• The GATE route to a campus Masters.

What recruiters say they look for

The placement portal shows a few comments from recruiters who hired BS students. They mention:

• A good grasp of the basics and clear concepts
• Hands-on skill in Python and SQL
• Logical and analytical thinking
• Quick learning and good communication

For job support, the IIC also asks for your profiles on sites like HackerRank, LeetCode or Kaggle, with activity points. Keep these active from the Diploma level.

The handbook's own advice: think about GATE

The Data Science handbook calls the GATE route its most recommended option for all students, because a GATE score also lets you apply to PSU jobs. It also has advice for standalone students who joined after Class 12. They should write GATE and join a college for their Masters, instead of taking the online PG Diploma or MTech upgrade. Describe yourself honestly

On your CV, give the full programme name, your level and your expected finish. Alumnus status comes only after a BSc or BS exit, so do not call yourself an alumnus before that.

Common questions

Is it harder to get a job as a standalone student?

The official reports do not compare the two groups, so nobody can give you a real number. What is clear is that you have one placement route instead of two. Start building projects and applying earlier than a dual degree student would.

Can I use the placement cell before I finish the BSc?

Only for internships, once you finish at least one diploma. Job support needs at least a BSc.

Should I stop at the BSc or finish the full BS?

That depends on your plans for work and study. The reports do not compare salaries by exit level. See whether to exit at the BSc or finish the BS.

Does this apply to Electronic Systems students?

The numbers here are all from Data Science. We found no official ES outcome data. The placement portal says recruiters post openings for ES students too.
