How Long Does IITM BS Really Take? Minimum and Maximum Time

The full IITM BS takes at least 4 years (12 terms) and at most 8 years. In Data Science, the BSc takes at least 3 years (9 terms) and at most 6 years. Part-time learners usually take longer than the minimum: the DS FAQ expects 4 to 5 years, and the ES FAQ 4 to 8 years. Finishing your credits faster does not bring the certificate forward, because the minimum is counted in terms, not credits.

There are three terms a year, starting in January, May and September, each about 4 months long.

The time limits in one table

The DS handbook also caps the BSc level and the BS level at 9 terms each. For the Foundation and Diploma limits, the handbook says terms you skip with the keep-alive (RKA) fee, and terms where you drop every course, still count.

Why fast credits do not mean an early degree

The DS handbook sets a minimum stay for the original certificate: 9 terms for a BSc and 12 terms for a BS, counted from your first term in the programme. The ES handbook sets 12 terms for the ES BS.

The handbook gives an example. Students who started in the first term of 2021 completed 4 years at the end of the September 2024 term. Their BS certificates could be processed from January 2025, if all other conditions were met.

So a claim like "I finished the BS in 2.5 years" can only mean the person finished the credits early. The certificate still waits until the 12th term is over.

The fastest pace the handbook shows

• The handbook's shortest path to the BSc lists 31 courses over 8 terms, mostly 4 courses a term. The BSc certificate still needs 9 terms.
• For the diplomas, the fastest pace is 4 terms, only for someone who studies full time, does nothing else and puts in at least 70 hours a week.
• The comfortable diploma pace is 6 terms at about 40 hours a week, meant for people who also study elsewhere or work.
• For people from non-technical backgrounds or new to programming, the handbook suggests 6 or 7 terms for the two diplomas.

What a typical part-time pace looks like

The official FAQs give averages, not rules:

• DS: the full programme can take 3 to 6 years, and a part-time learner will finish in 4 to 5 years on average.
• ES: it is a 4-year programme, and a part-time learner will finish in 4 to 8 years on average.

Failed courses, repeats and skipped terms all add time. At Foundation, the DS academics page expects about 10 hours per course per week, and about 15 at the Diploma and Degree levels. That, more than any rule, decides how many courses you can take each term.

Deadlines that can end your programme early

The maximum limits come with checkpoints on the way:

• DS Foundation, for students who joined from May 2024: at least 4 courses in 4 terms, 6 in 6, and all 8 in 9. Otherwise you are removed.
• DS Diploma, for students who started it from May 2024: 3 courses and 1 project in 3 terms (or a warning), then 6 and 2 in 6 terms, 9 and 3 in 9 terms, and all 12 and 4 in 12 terms.
• Degree level entry, for DS students who joined from May 2026: Foundation and Diploma must be done within 15 terms (5 years), or you exit with the diploma.

Add a few months for the certificate

After you finish, you fill an exit form in a set window. The original certificate needs approval from the IIT Madras Senate, which meets three to four times a year. Common questions

Can I finish the BS in 3 years if I take 4 courses every term?

You might finish some or most of the credits, but not get the BS certificate. It needs at least 12 terms from your first term, which is 4 years.

Does time spent after exiting count towards the 8 years?

For DS students who exit with an original certificate and later rejoin, the handbook says the time between exit and re-entry is left out of the overall time limit. All other limits still apply.

Do skipped terms stop the clock?

No. Terms under RKA, and terms where you drop all courses, count towards the Foundation and Diploma term limits and the checkpoints. See maximum time allowed.
