Is IITM BS a Scam? The Common Accusations Checked

No. The IITM BS is a real degree. It is approved by the Senate of IIT Madras, which awards degrees under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. Its fees, rules and outcome reports are published, and its graduates receive degrees at convocations. But "not a scam" is a different claim from "good value for you". That depends on your goals, your money and how you study.

Two separate questions

QuestionWhat decides it
Is it a legitimate degree? The law and official records
Is it worth it for you?Your goals, budget, time and study habits

Many "scam" posts and videos are really about the second question. They talk about rising fees, weak placement support, strict rules and slow replies. Those are fair things to discuss. They do not make the degree fake.

Why it counts as a legitimate degree

  • Legal basis: the programme's support desk says the BS is an official degree approved by the IIT Madras Senate (article dated 9 August 2024). The Senate has the power to award degrees under the IIT Act, 1961. It adds that the degree meets the requirement of any staff selection process that accepts a BS degree, and that each exam body sets its own rules.
  • No UGC approval needed: the ES FAQ says IITs are created by an Act of Parliament and do not need UGC recognition for their degrees.
  • Supervised exams: the FAQ says quizzes and end term exams are in person and invigilated at exam centres.
  • Graduations: at the convocation on 8 June 2025, IIT Madras said 867 students graduated with a BSc or BS, and it was the first batch with the 4-year BS. Another 365 graduated with a diploma.
  • Published data: the DS Program Report (updated 31 October 2025) lists 47,319 active students, 83% of those who started. It also shows 446 BS completions up to the May 2025 intake.

The common accusations, one by one

"The fees keep going up"

Official facts: fees were revised for students who join the foundation level from January 2026. The DS foundation level went from Rs 32,000 to Rs 48,000. Students who joined earlier stay on the old fees. Waivers of 50% or 75% exist, and IIT Madras said in June 2025 that 4,825 students were studying free through CSR support.

Fair point: the new foundation fee is 50% higher. Whether it is worth it depends on you. See the 2026 fee revision compared.

"The placements are fake or misleading"

Official facts: the FAQ does not promise placements. It says IIT Madras will try to make internship and job opportunities available. The Career Choices Report (January 2026) shows that in the September 2025 term, 58 students applied for at least one job through the programme's placement cell and 49 got one. In the same term, 61 students registered for placement support and 19 became eligible for it. Across the terms in its table (May 2024 to September 2025), jobs through the cell paid a mean of Rs 7.5 lakh a year. The median was Rs 6 lakh and the highest Rs 20 lakh.

Fair point: the numbers through the placement cell are small. Most job reports in that document come from a student survey, not from the cell. Do not expect campus-style placements. Read the placement report explained.

"They take your fees and then remove you"

Official facts: the handbook sets checkpoints. Students who joined the DS foundation level from May 2024 must finish at least 4 courses in 4 terms, 6 in 6 terms and all 8 in 9 terms, or they are removed. Warnings start from term 3. Since May 2026, a student who cannot meet a checkpoint even with the most courses allowed is blocked from registering that term. So you are stopped before you pay for that term.

Fair point: the rules are stricter than before, and skipped terms count. Read them before you take long breaks. See ineligible for registration or removed.

"Support never replies"

Official facts: the handbook (updated 18 June 2026) sets a path: raise a ticket, wait 24 hours, follow up on the same ticket, then escalate level by level up to the Director.

Fair point: some students say replies are slow. We cannot measure response times. Keep your ticket number and use the escalation steps in order.

"It is just an online certificate"

Official facts: the BS is a degree conferred by IIT Madras, not a course certificate. The ES FAQ says the mode, such as online or distance, is not written on the marksheet. IIT Madras says the curriculum and rigour are on par with its regular programmes. It does not publish data on how employers compare the two. See is IITM BS a real IIT Madras degree.

"There are hidden charges"

Official facts: RKA, repeat fees, make-up exams, drop charges and the Rs 7,080 alumni card are all in the handbooks. They are easy to miss, but they are published. See extra IITM BS costs.

When it may be poor value for you

  • You want campus life or guaranteed placement.
  • You cannot study on your own for about 10 hours per course each week, which is what the DS academics page suggests for the foundation level.
  • You cannot travel to exam centres, or to IIT Madras for ES labs.
  • You do not qualify for a waiver and the fees would strain your family.

If several of these fit you, read who should not join IITM BS before you apply.

Common questions

Is the IITM BS approved by UGC?

It does not need to be. The ES FAQ says IITs come under an Act of Parliament, not under UGC, and any degree granted by an IIT is a legal degree. Calling it "UGC approved" is the wrong way to describe it.

What should I do with scam claims I see on YouTube or Reddit?

First ask what the claim is really about. If it is about fees, placements or rules, it is a question of value, and the official numbers above help you judge it. If it says the degree is not valid, compare it with the Senate and IIT Act facts.

Is the IITM BS the same as an IIT BTech?

No. It is a different programme with a different format and entry route. Both are IIT Madras degrees. IIT Madras says the BS curriculum and rigour match its regular programmes, but that is not a statement about how employers treat the two.

Can I get my money back if I find it is not for me?

Only partly. You can drop a course within 4 weeks of the term start and get the fee back minus Rs 2,000 or Rs 4,000, into your student wallet. The qualifier application fee is not refunded.
