How to Explain the IITM BS Degree to Your Parents and Relatives

Tell them three things first. It is a real degree awarded by IIT Madras. You get in by passing IIT Madras's own qualifier exam, not by paying. And you study online at home, but write your exams in person at a centre. Then be honest about what it does not give you: campus life and a guaranteed job.

Here are plain answers to the usual questions, with the official source for each, so you can show them if they ask.

"Is it a real IIT degree?"

Yes. The IIT Madras support desk says the degree is approved by the Senate of IIT Madras, which awards degrees under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. The Electronic Systems FAQ adds that IITs are created by an Act of Parliament, and any degree granted by an IIT is a legal degree. IITs do not need UGC approval to award degrees.

For government jobs, the support desk says the degree meets the requirement of any selection process that accepts a BS degree. Each exam body sets its own rules, so check the specific exam. More in is IITM BS a real IIT degree and UPSC and government jobs.

"How did you get in without JEE?"

Through the qualifier. You study 4 weeks of foundation content, submit weekly assignments, reach a cutoff, and then pass an in-person exam. It uses fixed pass marks, not ranks. It is not a formality: from January 2021 to September 2025, 36.15% of first applications to the Data Science qualifier ended in a pass, per the September 2025 Program Report. Students who qualified to appear for JEE Advanced can skip the qualifier.

"How much will it cost?"

For Data Science students joining from January 2026, the official fees are:

Electronic Systems costs Rs 82,000 for the foundation level and about Rs 5.8 lakh in total. You pay only for the courses you take each term. A failed course is paid for again, which is worth telling parents upfront.

Fee waivers of 50% or 75% depend on category and family income. For example, General and OBC students from families earning Rs 5 lakh a year or less can get 50% or 75% off. See fees for Data Science and the fee waiver.

"Will you get a job?"

Be honest here. IIT Madras says it will try to make internship and recruitment opportunities available. It does not promise placement.

What the official data shows: of 545 Data Science students who finished the BSc level in 2024, 343 were working, 75 were doing a PG degree and 35 were still looking for full-time work in December 2025. Many of them already had another degree or a job. See does IITM BS guarantee placement.

"What do you miss compared to a regular college?"

• No hostel and no general use of campus facilities, according to the DS FAQ.
• No daily classmates or teachers in a room. You need self-discipline.
• Exams are in person at centres in cities you choose, so there is some travel.
• Electronic Systems students do visit campus for labs, and arrange their own stay.

"Can you do it with another degree?"

Yes, and most students do. At the June 2025 convocation, IIT Madras said 52% of students were doing the BS in parallel with another undergraduate programme. The IITM BS credits cannot be transferred to other colleges, though, so the two degrees stay separate. Read standalone or alongside college.

How to have the conversation

1. Show them the official website, study.iitm.ac.in, not a video or a forum.
2. Walk through the fee table together, including what a repeat would cost.
3. Agree on a plan: standalone or with another degree, and how many courses a term.
4. Set a review point, such as the end of the foundation level, when you decide together whether to continue.

Common questions

Will the certificate say "online"?

For Electronic Systems, the FAQ says the mode of study is not written on the marksheet. We did not find the same statement for Data Science, so check the current certificate samples on the official website.

What if you fail a course?

You repeat it in a later term and pay the course fee again. If you only missed the final exam, a make-up exam costs Rs 1,000 or Rs 2,000. Your grade card shows your best result, though the term-wise progress card lists every attempt.

Can you stop midway and still get something?

Yes. Every level has its own award: a foundation certificate, one or more diplomas, and in Data Science a BSc before the full BS.

Will foreign universities accept it?

The ES FAQ calls them the official diploma and degree of IIT Madras. Admission is still decided by each university abroad, so check the rules of the one you have in mind.
