What Salary Can You Expect After IITM BS? The Official Numbers

No official figure can tell you what you will earn. The closest guide for a fresher is the median salary of jobs through the placement cell (IIC). It was Rs 6 lakh a year in the Career Choices Report of January 2026. In the Batch 2025 Summary, the largest group of working graduates earned Rs 5 to 10 lakh a year. The Career Choices Report says the much larger salaries in its survey belong mainly to working professionals with many years of experience.

All these numbers are for the BS in Data Science.

The placement cell median: Rs 6 lakh

The January 2026 report gives these figures for jobs found through the IIC:

• Median: Rs 6 lakh a year
• Mean: Rs 7.5 lakh a year

The report shows 83 such jobs from the May 2024 to September 2025 terms, 49 of them in September 2025. It does not say exactly which terms the salary figures cover.

The median is the middle value: half earned less, half earned more. The mean is higher than the median, which usually means a few large offers pull the average up. For planning, use the median.

An older figure also exists. The April 2025 report gave a median of Rs 8,09,230 and a minimum of Rs 3.6 lakh. At that time only 16 jobs had come through the IIC. The newer median covers far more jobs, so trust it more.

Batch 2025: salary slabs

The Batch 2025 Summary follows 545 students who finished the BSc level during 2024. By December 2025, 343 were working. Their salaries:

Before you read the top rows as fresher pay, look at who is in this batch:

• 435 of the 545 were dual degree students or already working.
• 168 were aged 26 or older.
• The summary does not split salaries by work experience, by role or by how the job was found.

So the top slabs may include people who were already earning well before they joined.

What students report in the survey

The Career Choices Report also collects salaries from a student survey at course registration. It counts only students who said the BS helped them get the job.

In each of these terms, under Rs 5 lakh was the largest group. The report itself says the much larger salaries are mainly working professionals with many years of experience. Also, these answers come from students at every level, not only graduates.

What affects a fresher's salary

The official reports do not measure this. They do not break salary down by skill, role, city or your other degree. So what follows is advice, not data:

• Skills you can show. Recruiters see what you built. Your MAD1, MAD2 and MLP projects are a start. Read building a portfolio from your projects.
• Internships. Some student comments in the Batch 2024 and 2025 summaries describe an internship that turned into a full-time offer. These are single stories, not a rate.
• Apprenticeship. At the BS level, a company can offer a pre-placement offer after an apprenticeship. It is the company's choice. See the IITM BS apprenticeship.

Common questions

Is Rs 10 lakh a normal starting salary after IITM BS?

The official IIC median is Rs 6 lakh a year. In Batch 2025, 144 working graduates earned under Rs 10 lakh and 144 earned Rs 10 lakh or more, while 55 did not share. The higher group may include experienced people, so do not treat Rs 10 lakh as the usual fresher figure.

Does a full BS pay more than exiting with a BSc?

The reports do not compare salary by exit level. Batch 2025 mixes 208 students who finished the BSc and 337 who finished the BS. There is no official answer to this.
