Is the IIT Madras BS Degree Worth It in 2026? An Honest Answer

For many students, yes. The IIT Madras BS gives you a degree awarded by IIT Madras, a demanding set of courses, and fees you pay one course at a time. It is not worth it if you want campus life, a fixed timetable or a promised job. It rewards people who can study alone for many hours a week and who will find their own internships and jobs.

Below, we keep official facts and our own opinion apart, so you can judge for yourself.

What you actually get

• A real IIT Madras degree. IITs are created under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, which gives them the power to award degrees and diplomas. A letter from IIT Madras's Dean of Academic Courses, dated 1 September 2025, confirms that the Electronic Systems diploma and BS are official, recognised programmes under this Act. The ES FAQ adds that an IIT degree needs no extra approval from the UGC. More in is the IITM BS a real IIT Madras degree.
• An exit at every level. In Data Science (DS) you can leave with a Foundation certificate, one or two diplomas, a BSc or the full BS. In Electronic Systems (ES) the exits are Foundation, Diploma and BS.
• Fees paid in parts. For DS students joining from January 2026, the official academics page lists Rs 48,000 for the Foundation level and Rs 3.86 lakh to Rs 4.50 lakh for the full BS. Each term you pay only for the courses you take. Lower-income families and some categories can get a 50% or 75% fee waiver. See the DS fee breakdown.
• A serious curriculum. Foundation covers maths, statistics, computational thinking, Python and English. The DS diplomas cover programming, databases, algorithms and machine learning. The degree level adds software engineering, AI, deep learning and electives such as Large Language Models.
• Room for something else. At its June 2025 convocation, IIT Madras said 52% of students were doing this degree alongside another undergraduate programme.

What it does not give you

• No campus life. The DS FAQ says learners will not have access to IIT Madras campus facilities. You get an electronic ID card, subject to conditions. ES students visit campus, but only for lab work.
• No placement guarantee. The FAQ says IIT Madras will "try to make internship / recruitment opportunities available". That is an effort, not a promise.
• A small placement cell. For job support from the placement cell (the IIC) you need at least a BSc, plus an eligible plan, placement training and an assessment. IIT Madras's Career Choices Report of January 2026 shows 49 students got jobs through the IIC in the September 2025 term. The median salary for the IIC jobs in that report is Rs 6 lakh a year.
• A heavy weekly load. The DS academics page expects about 10 hours per course per week at Foundation and about 15 hours at the Diploma and Degree levels. Four Foundation courses means roughly 40 hours a week.
• Strict progress rules. Students who joined Foundation from May 2024 are removed if they do not pass 4 courses in 4 terms, 6 in 6, and all 8 in 9. Skipped terms count.

Do people finish?

Slowly, and many are still in progress.

The DS Program Report of September 2025 (updated 31 October 2025) says 56,457 students had started the programme. Of these, 47,319 were active, which the report calls 83% of starters. Its term-wise table counts 963 BSc completions and 446 BS completions up to the May 2025 term.

Read those small completion numbers with two facts in mind. First, about 41% of all the starters in that report began in 2024 or 2025. Second, a BS certificate needs at least 12 terms (4 years) from your first term, however fast you go. So "active" does not mean "on time", and a low completion count does not prove that most people failed. These tables do not give one clean dropout rate, and nobody should quote one.

What the official outcome numbers show

IIT Madras's Batch 2025 summary follows 545 DS students who finished a BSc or 114 credits between January and December 2024. This was their status in December 2025:

Of the 343 who were working, 110 earned Rs 5 to 10 lakh a year, 73 earned Rs 10 to 15 lakh, and 34 earned under Rs 5 lakh. 55 did not share their salary.

Three cautions:

1. 435 of the 545 were doing another degree or were already working. Only 110 did the BS as their only degree.
2. IIT Madras's Career Choices Reports note that, in their self-reported job data, the much larger salaries come mainly from working professionals with many years of experience. The Batch summary does not split salary by experience.
3. These are students who reached 114 credits. People who stopped earlier are not in this table.

Who it suits

• College students who want a second, demanding qualification next to their main degree.
• Working people who want structured learning in data science or electronics without quitting their job.
• Self-driven learners who will build projects, apply for internships and, if they want a masters, prepare for GATE.
• Students who cannot reach or afford a good college nearby and are ready to study alone.

Our view

The degree is worth it when you treat it as serious training plus a credential, and you plan your own route to jobs or further study. It disappoints people who join for the brand and expect the rest to follow. If you have just finished Class 12, doing it alongside a regular college is the lower-risk choice for most people. A simple decision checklist

Answer yes or no:

1. Can I give 10 to 15 hours per course every week, for several years?
2. Can I reach an exam centre three times a term, for Quiz 1, Quiz 2 and the end term?
3. Can my family pay course by course, or do I qualify for a fee waiver?
4. Do I have a plan for jobs or a masters that does not depend on the placement cell?
5. Am I fine without campus life?
6. If I am doing it as my only degree after Class 12, do I have a backup plan?

Mostly yes: it is likely a good fit. Two or more no answers: talk to current students and read the handbook before you pay.

Common questions

Is the IITM BS easier because there is no JEE?

No. Getting in is easier, but the courses are not. The September 2025 Program Report shows only 36.15% of first applications from January 2021 to September 2025 qualified. After that come checkpoints and in-person exams every term.

Can I stop if it is not working for me?

Yes. You keep the award for any level you have fully completed, such as the Foundation certificate or a diploma. The application fee is never refunded, and the handbook says quitting midway through a level cannot be reversed.

Will government exams accept this degree?

IIT Madras's support desk says the degree should meet the requirement of any selection process that accepts a BS degree. Each exam body still makes its own rules, so read the notification of the exam you want.

Can I do a masters in India with this degree?

Yes, the usual route is GATE, which the handbook recommends most. A Ministry of Education letter of 20 September 2024 also asked centrally funded institutes to examine accepting 4-year BS degrees wherever they earlier needed a 3-year BSc plus a 2-year MSc. That is a request, not a rule, so each institute decides.
