IITM BS: Apply for MS as a CFTI Student With CGPA 8 or Above

If your CGPA in the IITM BS is 8.0 or higher, you can apply for the MS programme at IIT Madras as a CFTI student. You do not need a GATE score. You still go through the admission process, which may include a test, an interview or both. The MS has at least 1 year of coursework followed by 1 to 2 years of research, and the institute pays a monthly stipend.

What CFTI means here

CFTI is short for centrally funded technical institution, the group that the IITs belong to. IIT Madras MS admission rules can include a CFTI clause in their minimum requirements. The Data Science handbook lists this clause as a route for IITM BS students with a CGPA of 8 or more.

The handbook also records a Senate decision. The CFTI clause had been left out of the minimum requirements for MS admission in two departments, MST and DSAI. The Senate noted the omission and approved including it. So these are the two departments the handbook names. It does not say whether other departments accept BS students under the same clause.

• A CGPA of 8.0 or more in the IITM BS programme.
• No GATE score needed.
• The department's admission process, which may include a test, an interview or both.

The handbook does not say at what stage of the BS you can apply, or whether you must have finished the degree first. The MS admission notice for your department will set this. Read it closely before you apply.

The handbook describes this MS as at least 1 year of coursework and then 1 to 2 years of research work. Its general comparison of the MS with the MTech adds more detail.

The amount of the stipend is not given in the handbook.

What you can do after the MS

The handbook lists three outcomes for this route:

• Finish the MS and apply for jobs.
• Upgrade and convert the MS into a PhD at IIT Madras.
• Finish the MS and apply for a PhD at IIT Madras or elsewhere.

2. Pick a department. The handbook names MST and DSAI for this clause.
3. Watch the MS admission calls on the IIT Madras research admissions website, research.iitm.ac.in, which the handbook points to.
4. Apply, and prepare for the test or interview that the department uses.

How this differs from the MS upgrade

The upgrade to the on-campus MS is a separate route. There you apply after 106 credits, finish the BS level on campus, and then move into the MS. The CFTI route is a normal MS application that uses your BS CGPA in place of a GATE score. Both need a CGPA of 8. Common questions

Is a CGPA of 7.9 enough?

No. The rule is a CGPA of 8.0 or more in the IITM BS, and the handbook gives no margin below that. If your CGPA is under 8, look at the GATE route or the project staff route instead.

Do I need GATE at all for this route?

No. The handbook says a GATE score is not required for this route. GATE is a separate route, and the handbook sets no BS CGPA condition for it. See the GATE route into IIT Madras.

Does this route apply to Electronic Systems students?

The route appears only in the Data Science handbook. The ES handbook lists only the MS upgrade. ES students should confirm with the programme office.
