Is the Online PG Diploma or MTech Upgrade After IITM BS Worth It?

It depends on who you are. The Data Science handbook itself says the online PG Diploma and MTech upgrade is for working professionals who cannot leave their jobs for a campus Masters. It strongly advises students who joined straight after Class 12 to write GATE and join a college for their Masters instead. You need a BS CGPA of 8.00 to opt in. For students who joined from January 2026, the PG Diploma takes your total fees to Rs 4,86,000 to Rs 5,90,000. The MTech takes them to Rs 6,86,000 to Rs 7,90,000.

What the upgrade is

After the 142-credit BS, you can keep studying online:

The rules for opting in:

• a BS CGPA of 8.00 or more,
• at any point after 106 credits and before you complete 142 credits,
• all core courses of the Degree level done, according to the DS academics page.

The academics page also says the MTech project must be finished within 8 years from the start of the programme. The June 2026 convocation, as reported in the news, included 25 PG Diplomas, so the route is running. Full details are in the online PG Diploma or MTech.

What it costs

These figures are for students who joined the Foundation level from January 2026.

The PG Diploma range comes from its course mix. The 3 core courses (12 credits) cost Rs 5,000 per credit. The other 8 credits cost Rs 5,000 or Rs 10,000 per credit, depending on the course level. The MTech project costs Rs 10,000 per credit.

The handbook does not list PG Diploma or MTech fees for students on the older fee structure, who joined up to September 2025. It also does not say whether income-based fee waivers apply at these levels. Ask support before you plan your budget. See the full DS fee table.

What the handbook recommends

The handbook is direct on this:

• Working professionals: the online PG Diploma or MTech is recommended for those who cannot afford to leave their jobs to join a physical college.
• Standalone students who joined after Class 12: the handbook strongly recommends GATE and a college Masters, and says they should not take this option.
• Everyone: it calls the GATE route its most recommended option for all students, partly because a GATE score also opens PSU jobs.

Online upgrade vs GATE and a campus MTech

Neither the handbook nor the academics page says the online MTech is the same as a campus MTech. Treat them as different routes with different strengths. Read the GATE route into IIT Madras.

What is not known

• How employers compare this online MTech with a campus MTech. No official data exists.
• Outcomes for PG Diploma or MTech holders. None have been published.
• How the MTech project is supervised. The handbook links a recorded introduction meeting and project documents. Watch them before you opt in.

Common questions

Can Electronic Systems students take this upgrade?

The route appears in the Data Science handbook and on the DS academics page. The ES handbook lists only the on-campus MS upgrade. ES students should ask support.

If I take the PG Diploma, must I go on to the MTech?

No. The academics page says you can exit with the PG Diploma or continue to the MTech level.

Is the MTech the same as one from IIT Madras campus?

The award is an MTech in AI and ML from IIT Madras, earned online through a project. The handbook does not call it the same as a campus MTech. Campus MTech students under HTTA also get a stipend, which this route does not mention.

I have a CGPA of 7.9. Is there any way in?

Not under the current rule. The cutoff is 8.00. You can still raise your CGPA before 142 credits, within the grade improvement rules, or take the GATE route.
