IITM BS Students and GATE: Getting Into IITM MTech or MS

The IITM BS handbook calls GATE its most recommended route for all students who want to study further. With a GATE score you can apply for an MTech, MS or PhD at IIT Madras, and at hundreds of other institutes too. Which of these you can apply for depends on the degrees you hold besides the BS. If you join the MS, the PhD or an MTech under HTTA, the institute pays you a stipend.

What the handbook says about the GATE route

The Data Science handbook's section on masters and research pathways lists GATE first. Its points, in plain words:

• A GATE score opens doors at hundreds of institutes, not only IIT Madras.
• You can use it to apply for an MTech, an MS or a PhD. The programme you can apply for depends on the other degrees you have apart from the BS.
• The institute pays a stipend if you join the MTech (HTTA), the MS or the PhD.
• It is the handbook's most recommended option, partly because a GATE score also lets you apply for PSU jobs.
• For admission details, it points you to the IIT Madras research admissions website, research.iitm.ac.in.

The handbook adds that everything in this section is a tentative guideline that can change. The rules on the IIT Madras website are the ones that apply.

MTech or MS: which one are you applying for?

The handbook compares the two campus programmes like this.

If you want structured coursework and a fixed end date, the MTech fits that description. If you want to do research and are fine with an open timeline, the MS does.

Why the handbook prefers GATE

• It is not limited to IIT Madras. The other routes in the handbook lead only to IIT Madras programmes.
• No IITM BS CGPA rule. As written, the GATE route has no BS CGPA condition. The CFTI route, the MS upgrade and the online PG Diploma or MTech all need a CGPA of 8.
• It is the advice for students who joined after Class 12. In the section on the online PG Diploma or MTech, the handbook strongly advises students who joined the BS after Class 12 to write GATE and join a college for their masters.
• It is a fallback. In the DS upgrade to an MS by research, students whose campus CGPA falls below 8 are not upgraded. The handbook says they may still apply for the MS by clearing GATE.

GATE can also earn you BS credits

A top GATE rank can count inside your BS too. If you are in the top 1 percent of a GATE paper, you can claim a 2 credit comprehensive exam course. In DS, that means GATE-DA or GATE-CS. In ES, it means GATE-EC, GATE-EI or GATE-EE. The score stays valid for 2 years. See comprehensive exam courses.

What the handbook does not cover

The handbook does not give GATE dates, the syllabus, the papers accepted by each IIT Madras department, or admission cutoffs. It also does not list which programmes you can join with only the IITM BS degree. Check these on the GATE website and on research.iitm.ac.in before you pick a paper.

Common questions

Can I apply for an MTech with only the IITM BS degree?

The handbook says the programme you can apply for depends on what other degree you hold apart from the BS. It does not say which programmes are open with the BS alone. Check the eligibility rules in the admission notice for the programme you want.

How much is the stipend?

The handbook confirms that a stipend is paid for the MTech (HTTA), the MS and the PhD. It does not give an amount. The admission notice for each programme is the place to check.

Does my IITM BS CGPA matter if I go through GATE?

The handbook sets no BS CGPA condition for this route. The programme you apply to may have its own minimum marks, so read its eligibility rules.

Is GATE the only way into an IIT Madras MS?
