How the IITM BS Placement Cell Works: Eligibility and Training

The IITM BS placement cell is the Industry Interaction Cell (IIC). It runs the placement portal at placements.study.iitm.ac.in. You can get internship support once you have finished at least one diploma, and job support once you have at least a BSc. Before you can apply, you must also buy a subscription plan, finish pre-placement training and pass the assessments.

Who can use it

• Only enrolled students. The portal is not open to outsiders. Recruiters post openings for Data Science and Electronic Systems students.
• Internships: at least one diploma completed.
• Jobs: at least a BSc degree completed.
• Medical certificate: both handbooks say that students who have not submitted the medical certificate get no placement support. This rule started in the September 2025 term. See the medical certificate rule.

The steps, in order

The portal's student page and its Terms of Service (dated 4 September 2024) describe this order:

1. Check that you meet the level rule above.
2. Register on the portal with your official student email. You register once for the whole programme.
3. Fill in your profile: education, CV and skills. You can upload up to three CVs, but one is used per application.
4. Choose a subscription plan and pay the fee.
5. Complete the pre-placement training.
6. Pass the pre-placement assessments.
7. Apply for openings on the portal and track your applications there.
8. Take the recruiter's tests and interviews, online or in person.
9. Accept or decline the offer on the portal.

Subscription plans

There are two plans: one for internships and one for jobs.

• The job plan lets you apply for both jobs and internships, within your eligibility.
• If you pick the internship plan while eligible for jobs, you cannot apply for jobs.
• A plan is valid for one year from the end of the current term. If you take it in the September to December term, it runs until the next December.
• The fee is non-refundable.

The public pages do not state the fee amount. Check inside the portal, or ask the IIC through the portal's support page.

Training and assessments

• Training is compulsory if you have up to 3 years of work experience, freshers included. With more than 3 years, it is optional but recommended.
• Training runs each term through partners of the placement cell. The terms advise you to enrol within a week of becoming eligible. If you enrol late, you move to the next term's batch.
• The portal's student page adds that students who did similar training before may go straight to the assessments. This differs a little from the terms, so confirm your case with the IIC.
• Assessments come after training. You need at least 70% overall and at least 60% in each assessment. If you fail one, you can retake it in the next term.
• Coding profiles: for job support, you must share profiles from sites such as HackerRank, LeetCode or Kaggle, with your activity points. A minimum is needed, but the public terms do not give the number. False points lead to permanent disqualification.

Rules once you start applying

• One internship and one job per student. After you get an offer in one category, you cannot apply for more in that category.
• No direct contact with companies. During the process, contacting a hiring company on your own without permission, including forwarding your CV, leads to disqualification.
• Show up. If you cannot attend a test or interview, tell iic@study.iitm.ac.in (opens in a new tab) in advance.
• Declining or not joining. Declining an offer after selection, or not joining after accepting, without a valid reason leads to disqualification. Refusing a job location or work mode you accepted while applying may also get you disqualified.
• Report your own offers. If you find a job or internship on your own, update your portal profile. If an internship turns into a full-time job, email the IIC.

Common questions

Can Foundation students use the placement cell?

No. Internship support starts only after you finish at least one diploma. At the Foundation level you can still look for internships yourself. See how to find an internship.

Is the placement cell open to Electronic Systems students?

Yes, the portal says recruiters post openings for both Data Science and Electronic Systems students. But the published placement numbers are only for Data Science. See what jobs ES can lead to.

If I pass the assessment, am I sure to get a job?

No. Passing makes you eligible to apply. Recruiters still shortlist and select. Read whether IITM BS guarantees placement.
