IITM BS Standalone or Alongside College: Which Is Better?

In our view, for most students who have just finished Class 12, doing the IITM BS alongside a regular college is the safer choice. Doing it as your only degree (standalone) can work, but only if you study well on your own and have a clear plan for internships, GATE or a masters. If you already have a job, doing it next to your work is common and fits the programme's design.

Here are the facts for all three ways people take the programme, then our view.

What most students do

At its June 2025 convocation, IIT Madras said 52% of students were doing the BS in parallel with another undergraduate programme.

The DS Program Report of September 2025 (updated 31 October 2025) sorts active students into types. It defines "dual degree" as doing another degree at a physical college at the same time.

The report also has a small "others" group at each level (537, 920 and 152). At Foundation, standalone students are a clear minority. At the degree level the three groups are closer in size.

What the Batch of 2025 shows, and what it does not

IIT Madras's Batch 2025 summary covers 545 DS students who finished a BSc or 114 credits during 2024. Of them, 110 were standalone and 435 were dual degree or working. Among the 110 standalone students, 88 had completed the BS and 22 the BSc.

The summary reports status for the whole batch: 343 working, 75 in a PG programme, 47 in internships and 35 looking for full-time jobs, among others. It does not split these results into standalone and dual degree students. So this report cannot tell you whether standalone students did better or worse. The earlier Batch 2024 summary had 33 standalone students out of 131, with the same gap.

IIT Madras's own advice to standalone students

The DS handbook is unusually direct here. After 106 credits, students with a CGPA of 8 or more can opt for an online PG Diploma or MTech after the BS. The handbook says this option is for working professionals who cannot leave their jobs. It strongly recommends that standalone students who joined after Class 12 write GATE and join a college for their masters instead.

The handbook also calls GATE its most recommended route for all students. GATE 2027 accepts students in the 3rd or higher year of a 4-year BS. A Ministry of Education letter of 20 September 2024 also asked centrally funded institutes to examine accepting 4-year BS degrees for programmes that earlier needed a 3-year BSc plus a 2-year MSc. The three options side by side

Standalone: what to plan for

• Time does not shrink much. A BS certificate needs at least 12 terms (4 years) from your first term, and a BSc needs 9 terms, however fast you earn credits.
• The handbook's fastest diploma pace, 4 terms, is only for someone doing nothing else who can study at least 70 hours a week.
• The placement cell (IIC) gives internship support only after one diploma and job support only after a BSc. You also need an eligible plan, placement training and an assessment.
• You will need your own study group, projects and internships. No college will provide them.

Alongside college: what to plan for

• The handbook's comfortable diploma pace is 6 terms at about 40 hours a week. It names students doing another degree as the people this pace is meant for.
• A missed quiz scores zero and there is no make-up quiz. You must attend at least one of the two quizzes to write the end term. See college exam clashes.
• Credits do not move either way. The DS FAQ calls the programme standalone and says its credits cannot be transferred.

Alongside a job: what to plan for

• The DS FAQ expects part-time learners to finish in 4 to 5 years.
• News coverage of the June 2026 convocation, quoting IIT Madras, put working professionals at about 14% of active learners.
• The online PG Diploma or MTech upgrade is designed for you, if you keep a CGPA of 8.

Who should pick which

• Alongside college if you have just finished Class 12, your family wants a regular degree, or you are unsure you can study alone for 4 years.
• Standalone only if you have tried the Foundation courses, you study well on your own, and you have a plan: GATE, internships from the diploma level, or a masters.
• Alongside a job if you already work and want structured learning without quitting. Start with 1 or 2 courses a term.

Our view: standalone is not a mistake, but it leaves less room for error. If you choose it, decide early how you will get work experience, and keep GATE in your plan from the diploma level onwards. The dual degree guide covers the practical side of doing both.

Common questions

Can I start alongside college and continue alone later?

Yes. The handbook has no rule that fixes you to one type. Your college degree may end before your BS does, and you simply carry on with the BS after that.

How many courses should I take while in college?

In your first term, your qualifier score allows 2, 3 or 4 courses. Our view: start with 2, see how the quizzes go, then add more.

Can standalone IITM BS students write GATE?

Yes. GATE 2027 lists the 4-year BS among eligible degrees, from the 3rd year onwards. The handbook itself recommends this route to standalone students who want a masters.

Is a standalone BS a full degree?

Yes. The BS is awarded by IIT Madras whether or not you have another degree. How employers or exam bodies treat it is their decision, so check their rules.
