Should You Leave Your BTech to Do IITM BS Full Time?

For most students, no. Leaving a BTech midway rarely makes you finish faster or safer. Your BTech credits do not count in the IITM BS, and a BS certificate needs at least 12 terms (4 years) from your first IITM term however fast you study. The usual better plan is to finish the BTech and do the IITM BS alongside it. There are a few exceptions, covered below.

The four facts that decide this

1. Credits do not transfer

The DS FAQ and the ES FAQ both call the IITM BS a standalone programme and say its credits cannot be transferred. So your BTech semesters will not shorten the IITM BS, and IITM BS courses will not count towards your BTech. If you leave your BTech in the 2nd year, those 2 years may leave you with no degree at all, unless your university gives an exit certificate. Check its rules.

2. The BS has a minimum time

The DS handbook says an original certificate needs at least 3 years (9 terms) for a BSc and 4 years (12 terms) for a BS, counted from your first term. The earliest you could hold an IITM BS is 4 years after you start it. Going full time helps you learn more each term, not get the paper sooner. See how long IITM BS really takes.

3. Doing both is normal

At its June 2025 convocation, IIT Madras said 52% of its students were doing the BS alongside another undergraduate programme. IIT Madras's Batch 2025 summary covers 545 students who finished a BSc or 114 credits in 2024. Of those, 244 had a BE or BTech as their other degree. The ES FAQ also says directly that you can do the ES BS along with another degree. See doing IITM BS alongside a BTech.

4. Nobody publishes how employers compare them

IIT Madras publishes the legal status of its degree and its own outcome reports. It does not publish how employers compare an IITM BS with a BTech from your college. Be careful with anyone who says one is "equal to" or "better than" the other in the job market.

What leaving would cost you

What doing both gives you

• A BTech in hand when you graduate from college, plus IITM credits and possibly diplomas by then.
• The option to continue the IITM BS after your BTech ends.
• GATE in your 3rd year of the BTech, which the IITM handbook calls its most recommended route to a masters.

The cost is load. The DS academics page expects about 10 hours per course per week at Foundation and 15 at higher levels. Our view: with a BTech, 1 or 2 IITM courses a term is realistic. When leaving might make sense

Our view: there are cases where leaving is reasonable, but they are rare.

• You are in the first year, the branch or college is clearly wrong for you, and you have tried the IITM Foundation and done well.
• Money or health means you truly cannot continue the BTech, and a lower-cost, flexible option is the only realistic one.
• You are switching to a lighter regular degree, such as a BSc or BCA, and doing the IITM BS alongside it. This keeps a backup degree.

Even then, speak to your family, check the fees you have already paid, and ask your college whether you can take a break instead of withdrawing. The handbook's advice to standalone students who joined after Class 12 is to write GATE and join a college for their masters. If you go standalone, plan for that from the start. Common questions

Can I transfer to the IIT Madras campus BTech from the IITM BS?

No. The FAQ says credits cannot be transferred, and there is no such route in the handbook. The on-campus MS upgrade is a separate, selective route for students with a CGPA of 8 or more after 106 credits.

If I drop my BTech in 3rd year, can I still write GATE?

GATE 2027 accepts students in the 3rd or higher year of a 4-year BS, or anyone who already holds a degree. Leaving the BTech means you depend on reaching that stage in the IITM BS instead.

I am failing my BTech subjects. Will the IITM BS be easier?

Not necessarily. Entry is easier, but the courses are demanding and the checkpoints can remove you. Fix the reason you are struggling first, whether it is interest, method or time.
