Doing IITM BS Alongside a BTech: Does It Work?

Yes, IITM BS alongside a BTech can work. A BE or BTech is the most common other degree among students who get far in the programme. In the official Batch 2025 summary, 244 of the 545 Data Science students who completed the BSc or 114 credits in 2024 also had a BE or BTech. But it is two degrees of work at once. Plan for about 10 hours per IITM course every week, on top of your BTech.

What the official numbers show

IIT Madras publishes batch summaries of Data Science students who completed the BSc or 114 credits. They list each student's other degree.

The June 2025 convocation press release also said 72% of students come from engineering or technology backgrounds.

Be careful with what these numbers mean. They show who finished. They do not show how many BTech students started and then quit.

The real workload

The DS FAQ puts the effort at about 10 hours per course per week. Every course has weekly online assignments, two in-person quizzes and an in-person end term. Programming courses also have programming exams (OPPE). Your BTech has its own labs, internal tests and projects.

Our advice: 2 IITM courses a term (about 20 hours a week) is the upper limit for most BTech students in a normal semester. Drop to 1 in terms with end semester exams, a heavy project or placements. The exam rules that matter most are in our dual degree guide.

Where a CS or IT BTech overlaps

Some DS courses cover topics that many CS and IT BTech syllabi also teach. Check your own syllabus. The right column is a general pattern, not an official list.

One student in the official Batch 2024 summary did the BS alongside an offline CS BTech. They wrote that the overlap helped them understand topics more deeply through extra practice. That is one person's view.

Overlap does not mean exemption

You still take every BS course and its exams. The handbook allows credit transfer only in three cases: NPTEL courses, some campus courses at partner institutes (after both diplomas with a CGPA of 8 or more), and the GATE comprehensive exam courses. There is no rule that exempts you because you studied a subject in your BTech. The other way is closed too: the DS FAQ says BS credits cannot be moved into your college degree.

One more trap: an NPTEL course can be credited only once, to one programme. If you use an NPTEL course for your BTech, you cannot also use it for the BS. See NPTEL credit transfer.

A sample term plan (our advice)

Each DS diploma has 6 courses and 2 projects. The foundation has 8 courses. At 2 courses or projects a term, this plan fits into the 12 IITM terms of a 4-year BTech:

It also stays inside the foundation and diploma checkpoints. If your final year has placements, take 1 that term and finish a term or two later. The BSc and BS levels would then come after your BTech.

The benefits and the costs

What you get:

• A structured track in programming and data science, with in-person exams.
• A certificate at every level: foundation certificate, diploma, BSc and BS.

What it costs:

• Money. For students joining from January 2026, the DS foundation costs Rs 48,000 and the full BS Rs 3.86 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh. Income-based waivers exist at the diploma and degree levels.
• Time. Around 20 hours a week at 2 courses, every term, for years.
• Your BTech grades. Our advice: if you have backlogs or a falling CGPA, fix that first.

We found no official data on how the BS affects BTech campus placements. The DS FAQ only says IIT Madras will try to make internship and job opportunities available.

What about Electronic Systems for ECE students?

ES needs campus lab visits of about 1 to 2 weeks, in windows around December to January, May to July and September to October. That can clash with your college semester. Read ES campus visits before choosing ES.

Common questions

I already know Python. Can I skip the IITM Python course?

No. The handbook has no rule to skip a course based on what you learned elsewhere. You register, do the assignments and write the exams like everyone else.

Is it better to leave my BTech and do IITM BS full time?

That is a big decision with real risks. We look at it in leaving a BTech for IITM BS.

Will people treat IITM BS like an IIT BTech?

My BTech is from a tier 3 college. Does IITM BS make more sense for me?

It can add a structured, examined track to your profile. It does not change how employers see your BTech. Judge it by whether you can give it 20 hours a week.
