Who Should Not Join the IITM BS Programme: An Honest List

The IIT Madras BS is a poor fit if you need campus life, someone to set your daily timetable, a job promise, or if you cannot travel to exam centres. It also does not suit anyone who cannot give it steady hours every week for years. Every point below comes from an official rule or IIT Madras document.

This list is not meant to scare you. Plenty of people do well here. It is a check to run honestly before you pay the application fee, which is not refunded.

1. You want campus life

The DS FAQ says learners will not have access to IIT Madras campus facilities. You get an electronic ID card, subject to conditions. There is no hostel, no daily classroom and no campus clubs in the usual sense. Students do meet at events such as Paradox, a student-run fest held on campus, but that is a few days a year.

2. You need someone else to set your daily schedule

Each week, a course releases about 2 to 4 hours of recorded video, practice work and a graded assignment with a deadline. There is no daily class to attend. You also decide how many courses to take each term. If you study only when a teacher is in front of you, this format will be hard.

3. You cannot give about 10 hours per course every week

The DS academics page expects about 10 hours per course per week at Foundation and about 15 at the Diploma and Degree levels. The ES FAQ says 8 to 10 hours per course per week. The handbook's fastest diploma pace needs at least 70 hours a week. If your college, job or family already takes most of your week, start small or wait. See how many hours per week IITM BS needs.

4. You expect a guaranteed job

The DS FAQ says IIT Madras will "try to make internship / recruitment opportunities available". There is no guarantee. Job support from the placement cell (IIC) needs at least a BSc, an eligible plan, placement training and a passed assessment. 5. You cannot travel to an exam centre

The qualifier exam, both quizzes and the end term exam are written in person. You must go to the centre on your hall ticket, and no other centre will let you in. Remote proctoring is only for students living outside India, and wrongly declaring your location counts as malpractice. A missed quiz scores zero, with no make-up quiz. 6. You want Electronic Systems but cannot visit campus for labs

The ES FAQ says travelling to IIT Madras for lab demonstrations and lab exams is mandatory. You must arrange your own stay. The ES handbook says visits generally fall between December and January, May and July, and September and October, and last about 1 to 2 weeks. 7. You plan to take long breaks

You may skip up to 2 terms in a row, on academic probation, with a keep-alive (RKA) fee of Rs 1,000 per term. Skip a third and you are struck off the rolls. Skipped terms also count towards the checkpoints. For students who joined Foundation from May 2024, you are removed if you have not passed 4 courses in 4 terms, 6 in 6 terms and all 8 in 9 terms.

8. You think "no JEE" means "easy"

Entry needs no JEE, but it is not a formality. The DS Program Report of September 2025 shows that 36.15% of first applications from January 2021 to September 2025 qualified. In the September 2025 term alone, 2,205 of 10,004 applicants qualified. After that, the courses and checkpoints still apply.

9. You want to do DS and ES together

The ES FAQ says the ES exam dates align with DS exam dates, so both programmes cannot be done together.

Who it does suit

• People who can study alone and keep weekly deadlines.
• College students or workers with about 10 free hours a week for each course they take.
• People who treat jobs and internships as their own project, not the programme's.
• For ES, people who can travel to Chennai for labs.

Our view: if three or more points above describe you, wait, or pick a regular college course. If only one or two do, you can often plan around them.

Common questions

I am weak at maths. Should I stay away?

Not necessarily. DS is open to any stream, as long as you studied Maths and English in Class 10. Weak maths costs you extra time, not the chance to join. See IITM BS with weak maths.

Can I try it before committing to years?

Yes. The first week of content is open to sample on the official website. After you apply, the 4-week qualifier works like a paid trial of four Foundation courses. The Rs 4,000 application fee (general category) is not refunded.

I have a heavy college timetable. Is it still possible?

Yes, if you keep your load light. The handbook's comfortable diploma pace is written for students doing another degree. The handbook offers no special arrangement for exam clashes, so check your college dates before you register each term.
