College Exams Clash With IITM BS Exams: What to Do

IITM will not change a quiz or end term date because your college has an exam that day. The Data Science (DS) FAQ says quiz and end term dates are fixed for everyone taking the course in that term. So the answer is planning: check both calendars before you register, make sure you can attend at least one quiz, and keep the make-up end term as your backup.

What happens if you miss each exam

The "at least one quiz" rule comes from the handbook, which also says to check each term's grading document for changes. Programming exams (OPPE) have their own table of outcomes. See how OPPE works.

One more thing makes clashes costly. The quiz for all your courses is one sitting, and the end term for up to 4 courses is planned as 2 sessions on one day. So a single clash can hit every course you took that term.

Step 1: Put both calendars side by side

These are the next three terms from the handbook. DS and Electronic Systems (ES) share the same dates.

If you take programming courses, add the programming quiz days too. In the September 2026 term, they are 22 November 2026, 20 December 2026 and 3 January 2027. Every term is in our exam dates for 2026 to 2030, and the September 2026 term has its own page: September 2026 exam dates.

Step 2: Set your load for that term

Once you see where the dates meet, decide how many courses to take. Our advice:

• Clash on one quiz day only. You can still take your normal load. Plan to write the other quiz.
• Clash on the end term day. Take fewer courses that term, or be ready to use the make-up exam.
• Clash on both quiz days. Do not register for that term. Missing both quizzes means repeating the course.

Step 3: If a quiz clashes

Write the other quiz. The missed quiz stays at 0 and pulls your total down, so push harder on the other quiz and the end term. Keep your weekly assignments on track too. The average of your best 5 out of the first 7 must be at least 40 out of 100 for the end term.

Step 4: If the end term clashes

You get an I grade and can take a make-up exam. The rules:

• The fee is Rs 1,000 per foundation course and Rs 2,000 per diploma or degree course.
• If you take it in the very next term, your quiz scores carry over and you redo nothing else.
• If you skip that next term, you must repeat the whole course.
• You get the make-up chance only once. Miss it and you repeat the course at the full fee.
• You can write at most 4 final exams in a term, and the make-up counts as one. With 4 new courses, you have no free slot.

Step 5: Spot a clash early and use the drop window

You can drop a course within 4 weeks of the term start. IITM keeps Rs 2,000 for a foundation course and Rs 4,000 for a diploma or degree course. The rest goes to your student wallet. In the terms we checked, Quiz 1 comes more than 4 weeks after the term starts. So you must decide before Quiz 1.

Also ask your college about its own rules for missed exams. IITM will not move, so your college is the only side that might.

Common questions

Can I write the quiz on another day or at another centre?

No. Dates are fixed for everyone in a course. You must also report only to the centre on your hall ticket. You choose exam cities at registration, not later.

Will a medical certificate get me a make-up quiz?

The handbook says no make-up quiz is given and lists no exceptions. For a missed end term, the make-up route applies to anyone who was absent.

My college exam is on the same day but at a different time. Can I do both?

The handbooks do not give session times. Check your hall ticket for the IITM timing. If both fit with travel time, you can attempt both. If not, you will have to choose one.
