IITM BS vs NPTEL Courses: What Is the Difference?

NPTEL offers single online courses. If you pass a course's exam, you get a certificate for that one course. The IITM BS is a degree programme with levels, from a Foundation certificate up to a BS degree. The two connect in one way: once you are a BS student, you can transfer a small number of NPTEL credits into your BS, at Rs 1,000 per credit, on a pass or fail basis that does not touch your CGPA.

One is a course, the other is a degree

An NPTEL certificate shows that you completed one course. It is not a step towards a degree on its own.

The IITM BS is built in levels. The qualifier admits you only to the Foundation level. You earn the Foundation certificate, then a diploma, and so on, only by completing the credits for each level. In Data Science (DS), the BS needs 142 credits. See what certificate you get at each level.

How NPTEL credit transfer into the BS works

Both the DS and Electronic Systems (ES) handbooks use the same basic rules:

• A 4, 8 or 12 week NPTEL course counts as 1, 2 or 3 BS credits.
• You register for the NPTEL exam with your official student email, and pay NPTEL's exam fee.
• You pay Rs 1,000 per credit to the BS programme. That is Rs 1,000, Rs 2,000 or Rs 3,000 per course.
• The credit is pass or fail. It adds to your credits, gets no letter grade and is not included in your CGPA.
• Only SWAYAM certification courses from the approved lists count.
• A course can be credited only once, to one programme. You cannot also count it in your college.
• You can take NPTEL courses any time after you join the Foundation level, but you claim the credit at the BSc or BS level in DS, and at the BS level in ES.
• If a credit transfer is all you do in a term, you still pay the RKA fee for that term.

Timing matters. The handbooks map an NPTEL course from the January term to the September BS term, and one from the July term to the January BS term. The full rules and course lists are in NPTEL credit transfer.

How much of the BS can come from NPTEL

In DS, NPTEL fills only a few slots:

• BSc level: up to 4 credits from NPTEL.
• BS level: 4 credits must come from humanities or management (HS/MG) courses, taken from NPTEL or from the programme's own electives.
• Whole programme: at most 8 NPTEL credits.

So NPTEL can cover at most 8 of the 142 DS credits. It cannot replace any Foundation or Diploma course. ES has its own caps at the BS level. See DS electives for how the slots fit together.

NPTEL credits can lower your BS fee

Under the DS fees for students joining from January 2026, level 3 courses cost Rs 3,000 per credit and level 4 or 5 courses cost Rs 5,000 per credit. An NPTEL credit costs Rs 1,000 to transfer, plus NPTEL's own exam fee. The handbook's own BSc level example shows 4 NPTEL credits plus 4 level 3 credits costing Rs 16,000, while 8 credits of level 4 or 5 courses cost Rs 40,000.

The trade-off is your CGPA. NPTEL credits carry no grade, so they cannot raise it.

Watch out for exam clashes

The handbooks say some NPTEL exams fall on the same day as IITM BS exams. It is your job to check before you register, and IIT Madras will not make special arrangements. See exam clashes.

Our view

If you want to learn one topic or test your interest, an NPTEL course or the free BS videos are enough. If you want a degree, you need the BS. Inside the BS, NPTEL is a cheap way to fill a few elective credits, as long as you do not need those credits to lift your CGPA.

Common questions

Can NPTEL courses replace the qualifier or Foundation courses?

No. NPTEL credit can only be claimed at the BSc and BS levels in DS, and at the BS level in ES. You still enter through the qualifier or JEE eligibility, and you complete the required Foundation and Diploma courses in the BS itself.

Can I transfer an NPTEL course I finished before joining the BS?

The handbooks describe NPTEL courses taken after you join the Foundation level, registered with your official student email. They do not cover courses done earlier, so ask the support team before you count on one.

Is an NPTEL certificate the same as an IITM BS certificate?

No. An NPTEL certificate covers one course. An IITM BS level certificate, diploma or degree is awarded only after you finish all the credits for that level.

Will a high NPTEL score raise my CGPA?

No. NPTEL credits are pass or fail and stay out of the CGPA.
