IITM BS vs an IIT BTech: The Real Differences

An IIT BTech is a full-time engineering degree on campus, and you get in with a JEE Advanced rank. The IITM BS is an online degree from IIT Madras. You get in by clearing a qualifier with fixed cut-offs, study at your own pace, and write your exams in person at a centre. Both are degrees awarded by an IIT, but they suit different students, and IIT Madras does not claim they are the same in the job market.

Getting in: fixed cut-offs vs a rank

For a BTech seat, your JEE Advanced rank decides which seat you can get. For the BS, you study four weeks of content in four courses, submit weekly assignments, and then write an in-person qualifier exam. A general category student needs at least 40% in each course and a 50% average. Anyone who crosses these marks qualifies. It still filters people out: from January 2021 to September 2025, 72,449 of 200,446 first applications to the DS programme qualified, about 36%.

Study mode and campus life

In the BS, each 4-credit course runs for 12 weeks, with about 2 to 4 hours of recorded video a week plus a graded assignment. The DS FAQ says there is no on-campus version and that students do not get access to campus facilities.

There are some visits. Electronic Systems (ES) students must come to IIT Madras for lab work, about 1 to 2 weeks each semester. The students' fest, Paradox, and the BS convocation have been held on campus. Read what campus access BS students get.

A BTech student lives on campus for four years, with hostels, clubs and a fixed batch of classmates. The BS cannot give you that.

Degree name and what IIT Madras claims

Neither BS is called a BTech, and a BS is not an engineering degree. IIT Madras says the curriculum, academic rigour and quality of the BS are on par with its regular degree programmes. That is a statement about academics. It is not a claim that employers treat the BS like a campus BTech, and no official survey measures that.

Fees and duration

You pay for each course when you register, so the cost is spread out. For students joining from January 2026, the full DS BS costs Rs 3,86,000 to Rs 4,50,000 in course fees, and the full ES BS costs Rs 5,80,000 plus the lab kit and lab travel. These are general category fees, before the 50% or 75% waivers some students get. See DS fees for 2026. The BS certificate needs at least 4 years (12 terms), and you must finish within 8 years.

Placements work very differently

The BS has a placement cell called the IIC. Internship support needs at least one diploma. Job support needs at least a BSc. You must also finish placement training and pass an assessment.

The January 2026 Career Choices Report shows how small this is so far. In the September 2025 term, 61 students registered for placement support and 19 became eligible. That term, 62 companies offered 257 job positions, 58 students applied and 49 got a job. The report gives a median IIC salary of Rs 6 lakh and a highest of Rs 20 lakh. The report says a large share of students find internships and jobs on their own. The DS FAQ says IIT Madras will try to make internship and job opportunities available. MTech and MS eligibility

The GATE 2027 rules list the B.S. (4 years after Class 12) as a qualifying degree and allow students in the third year or higher of any undergraduate degree. So BS students can write GATE. Each institute sets its own MTech rules, and some ask for a BE or BTech, so check first. Our view

If your JEE Advanced rank gets you a BTech seat you want, the campus BTech gives you things the BS cannot: campus life, a peer group and an institute-run placement process. If it does not, compare the BS with the options you actually have, not with the seat you missed. Many students also do the BS alongside a BTech from another college. Common questions

Does the BS certificate mention that it is online?

The ES FAQ says the mode, such as online or distance, is not written on the marksheet. The DS handbook does not say this, so check the certificate designs on the official website.

Can I move from the IITM BS into an IIT Madras BTech?

No. The handbooks describe no route from the BS into a campus BTech, and the DS FAQ says BS credits cannot be transferred to other colleges. The campus routes that do exist lead to the MS.

Is the BS easier than a BTech?

Getting in is easier because it is not a rank race. Staying in is not automatic. If you fail a course you pay the full fee and take it again, and foundation and diploma checkpoints can remove students who fall too far behind.
