Online PG Diploma or MTech After the IITM BS Degree

After you finish the 142 credit BS in Data Science, you can keep studying online. Complete 20 more credits (3 core and 2 elective courses) and you get a PG Diploma. Then do a 20 credit project and you can earn an MTech from IIT Madras. You need a CGPA of 8.00 in the BS, and you must opt in at some point between 106 and 142 credits.

So the MTech needs 40 credits beyond the BS: 20 of courses and 20 of project work.

The handbook does not give an application month or a form name. Watch the programme's announcements once you cross 106 credits, and ask support if you are near 142 credits and have not seen a call.

Who the handbook says it is for

The handbook is direct about this. It recommends the online PG Diploma or MTech for working professionals who cannot leave their jobs to join a physical college for a masters.

The handbook's announcements section has a "PGD / M.Tech Update" part. It links to:

• a recorded PGD and MTech introduction meeting on YouTube,
• a recording of an MTech project meeting,

The PG Diploma section also links a separate reference document. The handbook itself does not list the core and elective courses or the project rules, so these links are where to look for them.

Common questions

Can I stop after the PG Diploma?

I already have 142 credits. Is it too late?

The handbook says the option can be used until you complete 142 credits. If you have already crossed that point, ask the support team whether any window is still open for you.

Is this the same as the on-campus MS upgrade?

No. The MS upgrade moves you to the IIT Madras campus for the BS level and then into a research MS. The PG Diploma and MTech here are studied online after the BS. Both use a CGPA cutoff of 8 and an entry point of 106 credits.

Is there an Electronic Systems version?
