The Future of the IITM BS Degree: Where It Is Heading

The IITM BS is growing into a family of online degrees, with more programmes, online masters upgrades, more AI courses and stricter progress rules. Those are facts from official documents. What they mean for the value of your degree in five years is opinion, and nobody, including us, can promise it. Below, facts come first, and our view is clearly labelled at the end.

Fact: how big the programme has become

The DS Program Report of September 2025 counts first applications term by term:

In total, the report counts 200,446 first applications from January 2021 to September 2025, and 251,456 including re-applications. Growth has not been a straight line. The first term in January 2021 drew the most applications, and the May and September 2025 terms were below the same terms in 2024.

Active students have grown. The April 2025 Program Report listed 38,534 active DS students. The September 2025 report, updated 31 October 2025, listed 47,319. See the official enrolment numbers for how figures differ by date and scope.

Fact: more graduates each year

• June 2025: IIT Madras said 867 students graduated with a BSc or BS, the first batch to finish the 4-year BS, plus 365 with diplomas.
• June 2026: news coverage of the convocation, quoting IIT Madras, reported 1,460 learners eligible for awards: 634 BS, 197 BSc, 604 diplomas and 25 PG Diplomas.

Fact: new programmes

• Electronic Systems started in March 2023, according to the ES handbook.
• Aeronautics and Space Technology was launched on 9 February 2026. It needs Physics and Maths in Class 12, and some lab courses at the Diploma and Degree levels are done in person on campus.
• Management and Data Science was launched on 21 February 2026, with the first batch in June 2026. IIT Madras's press release says exams run on Sundays, at centres or by remote proctoring depending on the course.

Fact: a path beyond the BS

DS students with a CGPA of 8 or more can opt, after 106 credits, for an online PG Diploma in AI and ML (162 credits) and an MTech in AI and ML (182 credits). For students joining from January 2026, the official cumulative totals, including the BS, are Rs 4.86 lakh to Rs 5.90 lakh for the PG Diploma and Rs 6.86 lakh to Rs 7.90 lakh for the MTech. The handbook recommends this route for working professionals, and GATE for standalone students. See online PG Diploma and MTech.

Outside IIT Madras, a Ministry of Education letter dated 20 September 2024 asked centrally funded institutes to examine accepting 4-year BS degrees for programmes that earlier needed a 3-year BSc plus a 2-year MSc. It is a request, not a rule. Each institute decides.

Fact: more AI in the curriculum

Since September 2025, the DS Diploma in Data Science offers Introduction to Deep Learning and Generative AI with a project. New minors from September 2025 include Generative AI, Cloud Computing for AI, Multimodal AI Systems and Algorithmic Decision Making. The degree level lists electives such as Large Language Models, Deep Learning Practice and MLOps. See will AI make the DS degree pointless.

Fact: stricter rules

• DS Foundation and Diploma checkpoints for students who joined those levels from May 2024. ES has its own checkpoint rules.
• From January 2026, grades can be improved only within the same level.
• For DS students joining from May 2026, Foundation and Diploma must be finished within 15 terms to go on to the degree level.
• Fees were revised for students joining Foundation from January 2026.

Reported, not confirmed

The IIT Madras Director has spoken, in news reports, about mapping curricula so students can take courses at other IITs. We found no detailed official scheme for BS students. What exists today is in the handbook: students who finish Foundation and both diplomas with a CGPA of 8 or more can earn up to 24 credits from campus courses at IIT Madras and some partner institutes, such as IIT Palakkad and IIT Ropar.

Our view

This section is opinion.

• The programme looks set to keep growing in scope. IIT Madras added two new BS programmes in 2026, and DS students can now continue online to a PG Diploma or MTech.
• The stricter rules suggest a focus on students who make steady progress, not on raw enrolment. That may help the degree's reputation over time, but it may also mean more students are removed or leave early.
• The value of your degree will depend less on the programme's growth and more on what you do with it: projects, internships, GATE or a masters.
• Things we cannot know: how employers will view the degree in five years, whether more universities will formally accept it for masters, and how fees will change.

Common questions

Will the IITM BS be discontinued?

We found no official sign of that. IIT Madras added two new BS programmes in 2026 and keeps publishing reports and handbook updates. But no one can promise what a university will do in the future.

Will the degree become equal to a campus BTech in the job market?

IIT Madras states the degree's legal standing, not market equality, and it publishes no employer comparison. Treat any claim that it is "equal" or "better" as opinion.

Should I wait a year for the programme to improve?

Our view: no, if it fits you now. Rules and fees tend to be revised for new joiners, so waiting does not guarantee better terms.
