How to Register for Courses in IITM BS: Step by Step

Every term, you register inside a fixed registration window. You pick your courses, choose two cities for your quizzes and exams, and pay only for the credits you take. You can only pick courses whose prerequisites you have cleared. Some pending tasks, like the POSH training, can block registration, so finish them first.

This guide is for students who are already in the programme. Registering for the first time after the qualifier works a little differently. See how many courses you can take after qualifying for that.

Before the window opens

Check these things a few days before registration starts:

• Prerequisites. You can only register for a course if you have cleared its prerequisite. For example, you need Maths 1 before Maths 2. See the course prerequisites.
• POSH training. If you have not finished the mandatory POSH course, you will not be allowed to register in the next term. Read the POSH training rule.
• Checkpoints. In the DS handbook, if you cannot meet your level's milestone even with the maximum number of courses and projects allowed, registration is blocked for that term. You are told about this two days before registration.
• Your course limit. DS students can take courses up to their Credit Clearing Capability (CCC). At the foundation level, CCC is now only a recommendation. The ES registration section says the maximum is four theory courses.

The registration steps

1. Log in during the registration window and choose the courses you want for the coming term.
2. Stay within one level. The DS handbook says you can take any course inside your current level, but you cannot mix courses from two levels.
3. Choose two cities for your quizzes and end term exams from the list shown.
4. If you like, pick a different set of cities for each quiz and for the final exam. The exam vendor books slots in the cities you choose.
5. Pay for the credits you signed up for. The DS handbook says payment is online only. You pay only for what you register for, not for the whole level.

You are free to choose different cities from the ones you picked in past terms.

Payment and documents

The DS handbook says payment is online only. The ES handbook adds two points. Your registration is approved only after your documents are verified. And you pay for your courses only after that registration step.

If a payment fails or a document is stuck, raise a ticket on the Student Support Portal and follow up on that same ticket.

What happens after you register

As you complete courses term by term, you move up the levels:

• Finish all foundation courses and you can move to the diploma level.
• Finish the foundation and diploma courses and meet the required criteria, and you can enter the degree level.
• In DS, once you complete 114 credits as per the rules, you are eligible for the BSc degree and can continue to the BS level.

A warning for your final milestone term

The DS handbook has a rule for students in their last term to meet a checkpoint. If you do not register for enough courses or projects to meet it, the operations team contacts you. This happens within 3 working days after registration closes. You then have 3 days to reply. If you do not reply, your registration is cancelled and a refund is processed as per the rules. Common questions

Can I choose a different exam city for each quiz?

Yes. Both handbooks let you choose a different set of cities for every quiz and for the final exam. The vendor then books your slots in those cities.

Can I take a diploma course while I finish my last foundation course?

The DS handbook says you cannot register for courses across levels. So you finish the foundation first. The ES registration section does not mention this point, so confirm with support.

Do I pay the full level fee at registration?

No. You pay only for the credits of the courses you pick that term.

I missed the registration window. What now?

The handbook does not describe a late registration process. If you are not taking any courses that term, read about RKA and student status so your account stays active.
