Can You Lose Your IITM BS Seat? Every Way It Can Happen

Yes, you can lose your place in the IITM BS, but only in a handful of ways the handbook spells out, and most come with warnings first. The main ones are missing a progress checkpoint, being struck off the rolls twice, choosing to quit, serious malpractice and running out of time.

None of them happens because of one bad exam. A single failed course costs you a fee and a term, not your seat.

Every way, at a glance

1. Missing a checkpoint

For Data Science (DS) students admitted to the foundation level from May 2024, you are removed if you do not complete at least 4 courses within 4 terms, 6 within 6 terms, and all 8 within 9 terms. The 9-term limit applies to everyone. Skipped terms and terms where you dropped every course still count.

The diploma has similar rules for DS students admitted to it from May 2024. Missing 3 courses and 1 project in 3 terms only puts you on probation. Missing 6 courses and 2 projects in 6 terms, 9 and 3 in 9, or 12 and 4 in 12 means removal.

How to avoid it: warnings start from term 3. Count your terms from the day you join, and finish milestone courses a term early. The full rules are in the foundation checkpoints and the diploma checkpoints.

2. Registration blocked before the checkpoint

Under a rule updated on 17 May 2026, if you cannot meet a checkpoint even with the maximum courses allowed, you are not allowed to register that term. A removal letter appears in your dashboard, your student email is switched off after a month's notice, and your ID card is revoked.

In your final milestone term, you must register for all the courses and projects you still need. If you do not, the team contacts you within 3 working days after registration closes. You then have 3 days to respond, or your registration is cancelled and you exit. See ineligible for course registration.

3. Struck off the rolls, once or twice

You may skip up to 2 terms in a row. You are then on academic probation and can pay an RKA fee of Rs 1,000 a term. If you skip a third term in a row, you are struck off the rolls and your official email is suspended.

To come back, you pay a readmission fee of Rs 2,500, or Rs 5,800 if the three RKA payments are still pending. If you are struck off a second time, you are removed from the programme.

How to avoid it: register for at least one course before a third empty term in a row. Paying RKA does not stop you being struck off. It only lowers the cost of coming back. More in student status and RKA.

4. Choosing to quit

The dashboard has an "I quit the programme" option. Once you use it, your official email is suspended and no reactivation is possible. If you quit midway through a level, that level gives you no certificate.

How to avoid it: finish the level you are in, then use the exit form. In DS, a student who exits with an original certificate can later rejoin at the next level through readmission exams.

5. Malpractice

The programme's guidelines ban things like sharing assessment answers, letting someone else use your login and holding more than one account. Penalties listed include a zero for the work, a certificate being withheld or revoked, being unenrolled from a course or the programme, and losing access to the site. Misdeclaring your location in a remote-proctored exam is treated as malpractice too. See the malpractice rules.

6. Degree entry and time limits

In DS, entering the degree level needs a diploma CGPA of 6.0 and a project CGPA of 7.0. Students who joined from May 2026 must also finish foundation and diploma within 15 terms. If you miss these, you leave with your diploma rather than being removed with nothing.

The whole BS must be finished within 8 years, and each level has its own term limit.

Two cases at the very start

• Your qualifier score expires. A DS score is valid for 3 terms. If you do not register in that time, you must go through the qualifier again.
• ES through JEE. The ES admissions page says JEE-route students who miss both Quiz 1 and Quiz 2 in their first semester have their registration cancelled.

Common questions

Can I be removed for failing too many courses?

Not for failing as such. Removal comes from not completing enough courses by a checkpoint. Failing often makes that more likely, so recover early with repeats or make-up exams.

Does paying RKA protect me from the checkpoints?

No. RKA only tells the programme you are skipping a term. It does not stop you being struck off after a third empty term, and RKA terms still count towards the checkpoint term limits.

Will I get a refund if my registration is cancelled?

When registration is cancelled at a final milestone review, the handbook says the refund follows the applicable rules. It does not give an amount, so check with support.

Can I apply again after being removed?

The handbook does not describe any route back after removal. If this has happened to you, raise a support ticket and ask directly.
