Credit Clearing Capability (CCC) in IITM BS Explained

Credit Clearing Capability (CCC) is the number of courses you can take in one term. It is 2, 3 or 4, and it depends on the average marks of the courses you passed recently. At the foundation level, CCC is now only a recommendation. It is not enforced. At the diploma and degree levels, CCC is 4 by default.

The rules below are the same in the Data Science (DS) and Electronic Systems (ES) handbooks.

How is CCC calculated?

CCC comes from a number the handbook calls M. M is an average of your marks. How it is worked out depends on which term you are in.

• Term 1: your qualifier marks decide it.
• Term 2: the average marks of all Term 1 courses that you passed.
• Term 3 and later: the average marks of the courses you passed in the two terms just before this one.

Only passed courses count. A course you failed, or did not finish, is left out of the average. Also, the two earlier terms must be terms where your status was Active. Active means you had registered and paid for at least one course that term.

A quick example

Say you are about to register for your fourth term. In Term 3 you passed two courses with 72 and 80. In Term 2 you passed one course with 55. Your M is (72 + 80 + 55) divided by 3, which is 69. That falls in the middle band, so your CCC is 3. One more mark in that average would have given you 4.

Special cases

The table is used only if you passed at least one course in the previous term. Two other cases have their own rule:

• You failed every course you appeared for last term: your CCC for the next term is 2.
• You were absent for the final exam of every course last term: you get no grades, so your CCC stays the same as your last term's CCC.

When CCC is 4 by default

You do not need to worry about the table in these cases. CCC is set to 4 for:

• Students who register for courses in the same term as their qualifier exam.
• JEE entry students, in their first term.
• Everyone at the diploma and degree levels.

The newer rule: CCC is only a recommendation at foundation level

Both handbooks now have a rule for all foundation level students. Earlier, CCC was worked out from the last two terms and enforced. It decided how many courses you could take. Now it is only a recommendation.

The reason is the new foundation checkpoints. Students must finish a set number of courses within a set number of terms, or they are removed. A strict CCC could stop a student from catching up after a break. So the limit is no longer enforced. You can read those limits in the foundation level checkpoints.

Where the handbook is not consistent

The DS handbook's CCC section opens by saying CCC is a suggestion and not mandatory. The ES CCC section still calls it the number of courses you are "permitted" to take. The DS registration steps still say you can register for courses up to your CCC. The ES registration steps say the maximum is four theory courses. The newer rule on recommendation covers all foundation students in both programmes. If the registration portal stops you, raise a support ticket and ask.

How to use your CCC

Treat your CCC as a signal of how much load you handled in recent terms. If it is 2, your recent marks were low, and a heavy term may be hard. But the checkpoint rules still apply to you. Balance both when you plan. Learning paths for each term can help you pick a sensible number of courses.

Common questions

Do failed courses pull my CCC down?

No, not directly. Only courses you passed go into the average. But if you failed every course you sat for last term, your CCC for the next term is set to 2.

I skipped a term. Which terms are used for my CCC?

The handbook says the two terms used must be terms where your status was Active. It does not give a worked example for a gap in between. Check the number shown on your dashboard, or ask support if it looks wrong.

Is my CCC shown before registration opens?

The handbook does not say where or when CCC is displayed. It only explains how it is calculated. The course registration steps explain how the limit is used while you pick courses.

Does CCC change my fee?

No. CCC only relates to the number of courses. You pay only for the credits you actually register for.
