Ineligible for Registration or Removed From IITM BS? What It Means

If the IITM BS registration portal says course registration is not permitted because of the academic milestone, it means the system has worked out that you cannot reach your next checkpoint, even with the most courses allowed in one term. You are then removed from the programme. A removal letter (the handbook calls it the FTQ letter) goes live on your dashboard, your student ID card is revoked, and your student e-mail is switched off one month later. The handbooks describe no appeal route.

The checkpoints behind the notice (DS)

Terms are counted from the start of each level. Terms on RKA (registration keep alive) and terms where you dropped every course are counted too. The 4 and 6 term foundation checkpoints apply to students admitted to the foundation from May 2024, and the diploma checkpoints to those admitted to the diploma from May 2024. How the system decides you cannot make it

The test is simple. If registering for the maximum number of theory courses and projects allowed next term still cannot get you to the checkpoint, you are not allowed to register. You can write at most 4 final exams in a term.

Worked examples for a DS foundation student admitted from May 2024:

A diploma example: after your 5th diploma term you have 1 course and 0 projects. Term 6 needs 6 courses and 2 projects, so you would need 5 theory courses in one term. That is already over 4, so registration is blocked.

The handbook counts completed courses, so an I, U, WA or WQ grade does not help you here.

If you are in your final milestone term

You must register for enough courses and projects to reach the checkpoint. If you do not:

1. After registration closes, the operations team finds you within 3 working days and contacts you.
2. A pending payment for the missing courses is opened, and you must respond within 3 days.
3. If you do not pay, your registration is revoked, a refund is started, and you are moved to mandatory exit.
4. The FTQ letter follows 2 days later, and your student e-mail is switched off one month after that review.

Dropping courses in the drop window does not help. The handbook says dropped courses are not considered.

For the diploma, projects needed for the term 6, 9 or 12 checkpoint must be registered one term early, in your 5th, 8th or 11th diploma term (rule added 2 July 2026). If you miss that, the pending projects are shown on a Looker Studio dashboard and a payment opens. If you still do not pay, you must finish them in the milestone term itself.

How to check where you stand

1. Count the terms since you started your current level, including RKA terms and terms where you dropped everything.
2. Count the courses and projects you have passed, using your term-wise progress card.
3. Compare the two with the table above. Warnings start from term 3.
4. Watch system alerts, e-mail and WhatsApp after end term results. The notice comes two days before registration opens.

What to do if you get the notice

• Back up your student e-mail drive within the month before it is switched off.
• If you think the count is wrong, for example a grade not yet updated or a term counted wrongly, raise a support ticket. Give your roll number, your term count and the list of courses you passed. Follow up after 24 hours, then escalate level by level. See support and escalation.
• Do not plan around an exception. The handbooks describe no appeal or waiver for checkpoints.

Common questions

Will I get a warning before I am removed?

At the foundation level, the handbook says warnings on slow progress start from term 3. At the diploma level, missing the term 3 checkpoint puts you on probation with a warning, and the handbook promises alerts about later checkpoints.

I paid for courses and then got removed. Do I get my money back?

If your registration is revoked in the final milestone review, the handbook says a refund is processed as per the applicable norms. In the main case, you are blocked before you can register, so there is nothing to pay. For anything else, ask support.

Can I rejoin after removal?

The handbooks do not describe a way back after removal for missed checkpoints. The re-entry policy in the DS handbook covers students who exited with an original certificate, which is a different situation. Ask support before you assume anything.
