IITM BS Diploma Level Checkpoints and the 12 Term Limit

You now have up to 12 terms (four years) to finish the diploma level. Earlier the limit was 9 terms. Along the way there are checkpoints at 3, 6, 9 and 12 terms from the day you start the diploma. Missing the first one puts you on academic probation with a warning. Missing any later one removes you from the programme.

Who gets the 12 term limit

• Data Science: every learner, starting from the first batch that began the diploma in September 2021.
• Electronic Systems: every learner, starting from the first batch that began the diploma in May 2024.

The DS handbook adds that terms where you paid RKA (registration keep alive) and did not study are counted. So are terms where you dropped all your courses.

The checkpoints, DS and ES

Terms are counted from when you start the diploma level.

Probation at term 3 is a warning, not a removal. You can still register in later terms. It is a sign that your plan needs to change so you can reach the term 6 checkpoint.

Which batches have these checkpoints

• Data Science: students admitted to the diploma level from May 2024. Not for those who entered in January 2024 or earlier.
• Electronic Systems: the handbook says students admitted to the diploma from May 2026. The next line says it does not apply to those who entered in May 2026 or before. These two lines conflict. The 12 term limit itself applies to all ES students.

A mismatch in the ES numbers

The ES probation note says you must finish 6 courses and 2 projects within 6 terms. But the ES checkpoint list says 6 courses and 1 project. The handbook does not settle this. Aim for the higher number to be safe, and confirm with support.

What the DS handbook says about the final milestone term

The DS handbook (section updated 17 May 2026) has extra rules that the ES handbook does not have.

If you cannot reach a checkpoint at all. Suppose even the maximum number of courses and projects will not get you there. Then you are not allowed to register. After end term results, two days before registration, you get a notice and a programme removal letter (the FTQ letter) on your dashboard. Your student e-mail is switched off one month later.

If you are in your final milestone term but did not register enough. The operations team checks registrations after the window closes:

Courses you drop in the drop window do not count toward the milestone.

Projects must be booked one term early. A rule added on 2 July 2026 says the projects you need for the 6th, 9th or 12th term checkpoint must be registered in the term just before. That is your 5th, 8th or 11th diploma term. If you have not registered them, the pending projects are shown on a Looker Studio dashboard, and payment opens on your student dashboard. Pay before the deadline to get the project course and portal access. If you do not pay, you must finish those projects in the milestone term itself.

How to plan so you do not get caught

The DS handbook (updated 7 September 2026) gives three tips:

1. Finish each checkpoint's courses one term early. Then you can redo a failed course in the milestone term.
2. Do not leave projects for the milestone term. If January 2027 is your 6th diploma term, try to finish at least 2 projects by September 2026.
3. If you plan to finish the Diploma in Data Science with the BDM project, register for it by your 2nd diploma term. Students usually need 2 to 3 terms to finish it, because it has several stages and may need resubmission.

Common questions

Is academic probation at term 3 the same as being removed?

No. Probation is a warning. You can keep registering. Removal only happens if you miss the checkpoint at term 6, 9 or 12.

Does a term on RKA stop my diploma clock?

No. The DS handbook says RKA terms and terms where you dropped all subjects are counted in the total.

Does dropping a course after registering help me meet the milestone rule?

No. The DS handbook says dropping courses in the drop window is not considered. Only what you complete counts.

I started the DS diploma in January 2024. Which rules apply?

The 3, 6 and 9 term checkpoints are for students admitted from May 2024. But the 12 term limit applies to everyone from the September 2021 batch onward, so you must still finish within 12 terms.
