IITM BS Refunds: Application Fee, Dropped Courses and Quitting

IITM BS gives refunds only in a few cases. The qualifier application fee is not refunded, even if you miss or fail the exam. If you drop a course within 4 weeks of the term start, you get the fee back minus an admin charge. The charge is Rs 2,000 for a foundation course and Rs 4,000 for a diploma or degree course. That money goes to your student wallet, not your bank account. After 4 weeks you cannot drop a course, and the handbooks describe no refund.

The Data Science (DS) and Electronic Systems (ES) handbooks use the same drop and quit rules.

The qualifier application fee

The DS handbook and FAQ say the application fee is not refunded once paid. This covers students who miss the exam and students who do not pass. The ES handbook says the fee is not refunded once the last date for cancellations has passed. It does not say when that date is, so ask at once if you applied by mistake. The fee amounts are in the qualifier application fee guide.

Dropping a course: how much comes back

You can drop a course within 4 weeks of the term start date, and not after. IITM keeps a fixed admin charge per course. The handbooks say the admin charges stay the same under the revised fees for students joining from January 2026.

Here is what that means with real course fees. A DS foundation course is 4 credits, and many DS diploma courses, such as DBMS and PDSA, are 4 credits too.

Course and what you paidAdmin charge keptRefund to wallet
DS foundation course, new fees, Rs 6,000Rs 2,000Rs 4,000
DS foundation course, old fees, Rs 4,000Rs 2,000Rs 2,000
New-fee foundation course with 50% waiver, Rs 3,000Rs 2,000Rs 1,000
New-fee foundation course with 75% waiver, Rs 1,500Rs 2,000Rs 0
4-credit DS diploma course, new fees, Rs 12,000Rs 4,000Rs 8,000
4-credit DS diploma course, old fees, Rs 10,000Rs 4,000Rs 6,000
Project course (handbook example, Rs 2,500)Rs 500Rs 2,000

If you paid the admin charge or less for a course, you get nothing back.

Where the refund goes

The refund is added to your student wallet. It is not sent to your bank account. You use it when you register for courses in the next term. The fee receipt is made only after the 4-week drop period, when all fees are final.

This drop policy does not apply to students who are continuing after the qualifier in the same term. The full drop process, including what happens to your status, is in how to drop a course.

Quitting the programme

The dashboard has an "I quit the programme" option. The handbooks say that if you use it, the course fee you paid minus the deduction is refunded. You are removed from the programme and your official email access is cancelled. The handbook also says there is no way back to continue after quitting midway through a level.

Two things are not clear:

  • The handbooks explain this refund inside the drop rules, which apply only in the first 4 weeks. They do not describe any refund if you quit later in the term.
  • The note that refunds go to the student wallet is written for students who register again. The handbooks do not say how a student who quits gets the money.

Ask support both questions before you click the quit option. If you only need a break, compare it with skipping terms with RKA.

If you write exams outside India

If you drop all courses in a term, the handbooks say the facilitation fee for Quiz 1 is kept in full. Half of the facilitation fee for Quiz 2 and the end term is refunded. The DS FAQ words it differently: 50% of the end term exam fee for the dropped course is refunded. Confirm with support if this affects you. The fees are listed in applying from outside India.

Registration cancelled over a milestone

Since the handbook update of 17 May 2026, the programme checks the registrations of students who are in their last term to meet a checkpoint. If you do not register for the required courses or projects and do not reply within 3 days, your registration is cancelled and a refund is processed "as per applicable norms". Students who do not pay the pending amount are moved to mandatory exit, and a refund is started. The handbook does not give the refund amount. See ineligible for registration or removed.

Charges with no refund rule

The handbooks give no refund rule for RKA, readmission, make-up exam or alumni card fees. For the extra income check for fee waivers, the fee pages say a nominal fee may be charged. The ES handbook names Rs 1,000 and says it is not refunded, whatever the result.

Common questions

Can I move my wallet balance to my bank account?

The handbooks say drop refunds go to the wallet and are not paid to your bank. They do not describe any way to cash out the wallet.

If I fail a course, can I use the same fee next term?

No. The FAQ says a registration is valid for one term only. You register again and pay the course fee again.

Is the qualifier re-attempt fee refunded if I miss the second exam?

The handbooks do not say. They only say the main application fee is not refunded if you are absent or do not pass.
