IITM BS Course Registration From Term 2 Onwards

From your second term in IITM BS, registration is a mix of three things: new courses, repeated courses and make-up exams. Two limits apply. You can write at most 4 final exams in a term, counting full courses and make-ups together. And your new plus repeated full courses cannot go above your Credit Clearing Capability (CCC). New courses also need their prerequisites.

The rules below are the same in the Data Science (DS) and Electronic Systems (ES) handbooks.

The two limits

A make-up exam does not count toward CCC. But it does use one of the 4 final exam slots. So if you already have 4 full courses, there is no room for a make-up.

The handbook does not give a separate limit for projects in this section.

How your CCC changes after each term

Your result in the last term sets your CCC for the next one:

• You passed some or all courses: CCC is worked out from the courses you passed. The handbook says it is based on the average of passed courses.
• You failed every course: CCC is set to 2.
• You were absent for every course: your CCC from the previous term carries forward.

What you can register for

This depends on how the last term went. The handbook's quick table and repeat rules add up to this:

A few rules to keep in mind:

• Make-up exams are only for courses with an I grade. You can take one only once, and only in the very next term. See make-up exams.
• Repeats after a WA, WQ or U grade cost the normal course fee. You can spread them over one or more terms. See repeating a course.
• Improvement repeats cost twice the normal course fee. From the January 2026 term, you can improve only courses in your current level.
• New courses must meet all rules and prerequisites. See course prerequisites.

A worked example

Say you took 4 courses last term. You passed 2, failed 1 (U grade) and missed the end term in 1 (I grade). Assume your CCC for the new term works out to 3.

Both limits are full, so this is the most you can take under these rules. If your CCC were 2, you could add only 1 new course.

Where to do it

You register for all of this in the normal registration window of the term. The steps, payment and city choice are in how to register for courses. Once the window closes, you cannot add courses.

Common questions

Does a make-up exam use up my CCC?

No. The handbook says a make-up exam does not count toward CCC. It does count toward the limit of 4 final exams in a term.

I failed every course last term. How many can I take now?

Your CCC is set to 2. Where CCC is applied as a limit, that means up to 2 full courses, new or repeated, in the next term.

I was absent for all my exams last term. What is my CCC?

It stays the same as the term before. The handbook says CCC carries forward when you are absent for all courses. You can also take make-up exams for those courses, within the 4 final exam limit.

Can I take 5 courses if my CCC allowed it?

Not if each has a final exam. The handbook caps final exams at 4 per term, counting full courses and make-ups together.
