Will I Get a Job After IITM BS? An Honest Answer for Worried Students

Nobody can promise you a job after the IITM BS, and IIT Madras does not either. But the official follow-up of one full batch is steadier than the scary videos suggest: of 545 Data Science students who finished the BSc level in 2024, 343 were working and 35 were still looking for a full-time job in December 2025.

The official data cannot predict your own outcome, but it does show which steps open doors.

What IIT Madras promises, and what it does not

The Data Science FAQ says the programme will "try to make internship / recruitment opportunities available" and will notify students when they come up. It also says IIT Madras will actively reach out to recruiters for graduates. There is no guarantee in either sentence. The Electronic Systems FAQ uses similar words. Batch 2025: where one full batch ended up

The Batch 2025 Summary follows 545 DS students who completed a BSc or 114 credits between January and December 2024. Their status was compiled in December 2025.

What this does and does not mean

• Many already had a head start. 435 of the 545 were dual degree students or working professionals. Only 110 were standalone. The summary does not split outcomes by type, and "working" includes people who already had jobs.
• Most earn under Rs 15 lakh. Of the 343 working, the largest group (110) earned Rs 5 to 10 lakh a year, 34 earned under Rs 5 lakh and 73 earned Rs 10 to 15 lakh. Only 8 were above Rs 50 lakh, and 55 did not share a figure.
• Most came from families earning above Rs 5 lakh. 451 of the 545 had a family income above Rs 5 lakh a year while studying.
• The earlier batch looked similar. The Batch 2024 Summary covered 131 students: 91 working, 18 in PG study and 10 looking for full-time jobs.

Jobs through the placement cell are still few

The placement cell (IIC) posts jobs and internships on its portal. In the September 2025 term, per the Career Choices Report of January 2026, 62 companies advertised 257 positions, 58 students applied and 49 got a job. The report gives a median salary of Rs 6 lakh a year for IIC jobs.

You also cannot use it early. Job support needs at least a BSc, and internship support needs at least one diploma. You must also buy an eligible plan, finish placement training and pass an assessment. See how the placement cell works.

Many students find work on their own

The report says a large fraction of students find internships and jobs on their own. It counts those that students report in a survey, and only when they said the BS helped them. In the January 2026 term, students reported 1,115 internships and 379 jobs. Foundation students alone reported 370 internships. These are self-reported and unchecked, and the report notes that the highest salaries belong mainly to experienced professionals. The details are in the placement report explained.

What actually improves your chances

1. Finish at least one diploma. It opens IIC internship support. The diploma projects, such as MAD 1, MAD 2 and the MLP project in Data Science, give you real work to show employers.
2. Look for internships early. Students report internships from the Foundation level onwards. You do not need to wait for the IIC. Our guide to internships for IITM BS students covers where to start.
3. Consider the BS-level apprenticeship. It is an optional industry role that earns credits. See the apprenticeship rules.
4. If this is your only degree, have a plan beyond placements. The handbook itself advises standalone students who joined after Class 12 to take GATE and join a college for their masters.
5. Keep your CGPA at 8 or above if you can. Several IIT Madras masters routes, such as the CFTI route to the MS, ask for a CGPA of 8.
6. Submit your medical certificate. Without it, the programme office will not give you placement support or bonafide certificates.
7. Consider doing it alongside a college degree. More than half of students do, and your college has its own placement process as well.

Common questions

Is a job guaranteed if I complete the full BS?

No. The FAQ promises to try to make opportunities available and to reach out to recruiters, not a job. Plan as if you will find your own first job, and treat the IIC as an extra route.

Can I get a job with only a diploma?

The IIC offers internship support after one diploma, not job support. We found no official data on jobs for students who exit with a diploma, so check the portal rules before you plan around it.

What salary should a fresher expect?

The official reports do not separate freshers from experienced people. The IIC median of Rs 6 lakh a year and the Batch 2025 slabs are the best official guides. Read salary after IITM BS before you believe any headline figure.

Are standalone students worse off?

The official summaries do not say. They group dual degree students with working professionals and never split the outcomes. What we know is that standalone students were 110 of the 545 in Batch 2025.
