Is the IITM BS a Real IIT Madras Degree? The Official Answer

Yes. The IITM BS is an official degree of IIT Madras. It is not a certificate from a private partner or an ed-tech company. The IIT Madras Senate approves it, and the Senate has the power to award degrees under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961.

What this does not settle is how every employer sees it. That is up to each employer, and IIT Madras does not publish data on it.

What IIT Madras officially says

Three official sources answer this question.

• Support desk (updated 9 August 2024): the BS is an official degree approved by the Senate of IIT Madras, which can award degrees under the IIT Act, 1961. The same answer says the syllabus and learning are as rigorous as a campus programme.
• Dean (Academic Courses) letter, 1 September 2025: it confirms that the Diploma in Electronic Systems and the BS in Electronic Systems are official and recognised programmes of IIT Madras. It says this comes from powers given to the institute through an Act of Parliament. It quotes section 6(1)(b) of the IIT Act, which lets each IIT hold exams and grant degrees and diplomas. This letter names only the ES awards. It is on the ES important documents page.
• IIT Madras website: it says the curriculum, rigour and quality of the non-campus BS programmes are on par with its regular degree programmes.

Who issues each award

Only the BSc and the BS are degrees. The Foundation certificate and the diplomas are not.

The sample BS certificate on the DS website is issued in the name of Indian Institute of Technology Madras. It has the institute seal and signature lines for the Registrar, the Director and the Chairman of the Board of Governors. No original certificate is made until the Senate approves it, and the Senate meets three to four times a year.

A real degree is not the same as a campus BTech

A valid IIT Madras degree is still a different programme from a campus degree. The official sources show these differences:

• It is a Bachelor of Science (BS), not a BTech.
• Lessons are online. Quizzes and end term exams are in person at exam centres. ES students also come to campus for labs.
• The DS FAQ says there is no on-campus version of the DS programme. Enrolled learners do not get access to IIT Madras campus facilities.
• Passing the qualifier only lets you take Foundation courses. The handbook says this is not admission to a degree. You get the degree after you earn all the required credits.
• Alumni status comes only when you finish a BSc or BS. Foundation and diploma exits do not get it.

The legal question and the market question

People mix up two different questions.

1. Is it a valid degree? Yes. IIT Madras grants it under an Act of Parliament. It does not need UGC approval, as explained in why IITs do not need UGC approval.
2. Will every employer, exam or university treat it like a campus degree? IIT Madras does not claim that. Its support desk says the organisation where you apply for a job or higher studies decides whether to accept the degree.

One more official document helps here. A Ministry of Education letter of 20 September 2024, listed on the ES important documents page, calls 4-year BS programmes standard undergraduate degrees under NEP 2020. It asks centrally funded institutes to examine accepting them for research programmes. It is a request, not a binding rule.

You will see strong opinions online on both sides. Treat them as opinions. The official data is limited. IITM's Batch 2025 report covers 545 DS students who finished a BSc or 114 credits during 2024. By December 2025, 343 of them were working and 75 were in postgraduate study. But 435 of the 545 were also doing another degree or were already working. What you should check yourself

• For a job: ask the employer whether a BS or BSc meets their degree rule.

• For higher studies: read the admitting institute's eligibility rules for your exact programme.
• If someone doubts the degree: share the support desk answer. ES students can also share the Dean's letter.

Common questions

Is the IITM BS the same as the IIT Madras BTech?

No. Both are IIT Madras degrees, but they are different programmes. The BS is a Bachelor of Science with online lessons and in-person exams. It has its own courses, fees and rules.

Is the Foundation certificate an IIT Madras degree?

No. It is a certificate from CODE, IIT Madras, for finishing the Foundation level. The degrees are the BSc (DS only) and the BS.

Is the IITM BS a distance learning degree?

IIT Madras calls it a hybrid programme: you learn online and take assessments in person at exam centres. The ES FAQ says a mode such as online or distance is not written on the marksheet. More in does the certificate say online.

When can I call myself an IIT Madras alumnus?

Only after you complete the BSc or BS and exit. If you leave with a Foundation certificate or a diploma, you do not get alumnus status. See IITM BS alumni status.
