IITM BS Electronic Systems Campus Visits: How Many and When

At the foundation level of the IITM BS in Electronic Systems, you visit IIT Madras at most twice. A lab policy that took effect in May 2026 groups the 5 foundation labs into two visits. Visits happen in three windows a year: December to January, May to July and September to October. The programme overview says each visit lasts about 1 to 2 weeks.

Why you have to visit the campus

ES lab courses are hybrid. You do the experiments at home using process videos and a lab kit. Then you come to IIT Madras in person to show your work and complete the lab. These visits are mandatory. The handbook tells applicants to be ready for this travel before they join.

The visits are only for labs. Quizzes and end term exams are written at exam centres in the cities you pick during registration.

The two allowed tracks for foundation labs

To keep foundation trips to two, you must follow one of two approved lab groupings.

Both tracks keep the Electronics Lab after the ESTC Lab, and the Embedded C Lab after the C Programming Lab. Those are the two lab prerequisites in the policy.

Two points in the handbook are confusing here:

• The tracks label the visits "Term 1" and "Term 2", but the same policy says there is no lab in Term 1. Read them as your first and second lab terms, not your first two terms in the programme.
• Right after the tracks, the handbook says students must visit twice: first for the ESTC, C and Linux labs, then for the Electronics and Embedded C labs. That matches Option A only. If you want Option B, confirm with support that it is open to you.

When the visits fall in the suggested study plans

In every plan, the first visit covers the ESTC, Linux and C Programming labs, and the second covers the Electronics and Embedded C labs. See ES study plans for what you study in each term.

Visits after the foundation

The two-visit limit is for the foundation level. The handbook does not set a number of visits for the diploma or degree. The suggested learning paths show these lab days:

• Analog Electronics Lab (2 days) and Digital System Design Lab (1 day), in the same term.
• Sensors Lab (2 days) with the two diploma projects (2 weeks), in the same term.
• Embedded Linux and FPGA Lab (1 day), at the degree level.

One line in the handbook says students come for labs about twice a year, depending on their courses that term.

Tips for planning your visits

• Register your labs in pairs or groups from one track. Registering for a single lab gets you an I grade and no visit that term. See the single lab rule.
• Before a lab term, check that you have done, or are doing, the theory courses each lab needs.
• Finish the home experiments before you travel. The visit is where you show that work.
• Ask for leave from college or work early. A visit can take 1 to 2 weeks, and the handbook gives only the windows, not exact dates.
• Keep your quiz and exam city plans separate. Those trips are to exam centres, not to IIT Madras.

Common questions

Will I have to stay in Chennai for the whole window?

The handbook does not say that. It says a visit lasts about 1 to 2 weeks, and the windows are longer than that. Your exact dates should come from the programme team.

Does the programme pay for travel or stay?

The handbook does not mention any travel or stay support for lab visits. Plan for the cost yourself unless the programme tells you otherwise.

What if I cannot travel in a given term?

Do not register for labs in that term. Take theory courses instead, and register for a full lab group in a term when you can travel. Keep an eye on the ES checkpoints, since all foundation courses and labs have a time limit.

Which track should I pick, Option A or Option B?

Option A takes three labs in the first visit, so you need the ESTC, C and Linux courses done in time. Option B leaves the Linux lab for the second visit. That can help if you have not reached the Linux course by your first lab term. Because the handbook's later summary mentions only the Option A pattern, check with support before you choose Option B.
