How Credits Work in IITM BS: The DS and ES Credit System

In IITM BS, one credit stands for 14 hours of learning. The BS degree needs 142 credits in both Data Science (DS) and Electronic Systems (ES). DS also has a BSc degree at 114 credits. ES has no BSc.

What does one credit mean?

Both handbooks follow the UGC way of counting: 14 hours of your engagement with a course count as 1 credit. So a 4 credit course means about 56 hours of work over the term. The ES handbook adds that a 4 credit course usually runs for 12 weeks, with recorded videos every week.

An IITM BS credit is not the same size as a credit on the IIT Madras campus. Both handbooks say 1 credit in the BS programme equals 3 credits in the current campus credit system.

Credits in the Data Science programme

DS has four levels. You collect credits level by level.

This is how the two degree totals come out:

• Foundation + Diploma + BSc level: 32 + 54 + 28 = 114 credits for the BSc.
• 114 + 28 at the BS level = 142 credits for the BS.

Where the DS credits come from

The DS handbook also splits each level by the kind of credit.

In plain words:

• At the BSc level, up to 4 credits can come from NPTEL courses.
• At the BS level, 4 credits must come from the HS/MG group (humanities and management type courses). These can be NPTEL courses or programme electives.
• An apprenticeship can replace some theory credits at the BS level. It is optional.
• The handbook caps credits from courses that do not count towards your CGPA at 24.

A few students fall short of 54 credits at the diploma level. The handbook calls this a temporary case. They must take extra courses at the BSc level, because the BSc is given only at the full 114 credits.

Credits in the Electronic Systems programme

ES has three levels. You can exit with a foundation certificate, a diploma or the BS degree.

43 + 43 + 56 = 142 credits for the BS in Electronic Systems.

Where the ES credits come from

At the ES BS level, an apprenticeship is optional and replaces elective credits. NPTEL credit is marked optional, with the details still "to be decided".

There is a mismatch here. The BS row of this second table (16 + 1 + 44) adds up to 61, but the level table and the 142 total both use 56. The handbook does not explain the difference. Plan with 56 and confirm the split with the ES support team.

How credits turn into a certificate

• You get a diploma or degree only after you collect the credits for that stage by completing the set courses and meeting any other required conditions.
• Being allowed into a level does not mean you will leave with that level's certificate.
• In both programmes the qualifier only lets you into the foundation courses. It is not admission to the full degree.

Common questions

Is an IITM BS credit the same as a credit in my college?

The handbooks only compare it with the IIT Madras campus system, where 1 BS credit equals 3 campus credits. They do not compare it with other colleges. The base rule is 14 hours of learning per credit.

How many credits is one course?

It depends on the course. In the DS diploma, most theory courses listed with credits are 4 credits, Tools in Data Science is 3 credits, and each project is 2 credits. In the DS degree level course table, every course is 4 credits except the two comprehensive exam courses, which are 2 credits each.

Do I have to do an apprenticeship to finish 142 credits?

Can NPTEL courses count towards my credits?
