IITM BS Data Science vs BS in Management and Data Science

Both are online IIT Madras BS degrees of 142 credits, and both start with the same four qualifier courses. Data Science (DS) goes deep into programming and machine learning. Management and Data Science (MG) mixes economics, finance, marketing and operations with analytics for business. The fees are close. MG was launched on 21 February 2026 and its first batch started in June 2026, so it has no outcome data yet.

DS and MG side by side

Fees are the official figures for general category students, before any waiver. The DS fee applies to students joining from January 2026.

What the two share

• Entry. The same eligibility, the same application fee (Rs 4,000 for General and OBC, Rs 2,000 for SC, ST or PwD, Rs 1,000 for SC or ST who are also PwD) and the same four qualifier courses. Both also let JEE Advanced eligible students skip the qualifier.
• Four Foundation courses. Maths for DS I, Stats for DS I, Computational Thinking and English I appear in both.
• Foundation fee. Rs 48,000 in both, at Rs 1,500 per credit.
• Format. Recorded lectures online, exams at centres (see the exam note below), and up to 8 years to finish.

Where the courses split

There is some overlap beyond the Foundation. DS already has Business Data Management and a Business Analytics option in its data science diploma. Its Economics and Finance minor uses Corporate Finance and Managerial Economics, which also sit in the MG diploma level. See the DS Economics and Finance minor.

What MG costs, level by level

The MG page lists fee waivers of 50% or 75% based on category and family income. For the DS breakdown, see DS fees for 2026.

Exams

The MG website says quizzes and exams are in person, with end term exams on Sundays, and that learners based in other countries may take remote proctored exams. That matches DS, where remote proctoring is only for students outside India. The launch press release was looser. It said exams may be at centres in India or online with remote proctoring, without saying who gets which. Go by the MG website, and confirm before you plan travel.

No outcome data for MG yet

DS has published batch summaries and career reports. MG took its first students in June 2026, so no MG student has graduated, and there are no placement or higher study numbers. Anyone quoting MG placement figures today is guessing.

Switching from DS to MG

The DS handbook links a DS to MG switch policy, with slides and an FAQ for batches from May 2024 to January 2026. The handbook does not spell out the rules itself, so read the linked FAQ or ask support before you plan a switch.

Our view

Choose DS if you want to write code and build models, as a developer, data scientist or ML engineer. Choose MG if you are drawn to business roles and want analytics applied to marketing, finance, HR and operations. Since MG is new, its first batches will not have seniors' results to learn from. Common questions

Is there a BSc exit in Management and Data Science?

The MG academics page lists three exits: a Foundation certificate, the Diploma in Data Analytics for Business, and the BS in Management and Data Science. It does not list a BSc exit, unlike DS.

Do MG graduates become IIT Madras alumni?

The MG website says the IIT Madras Senate approves and offers the diploma and degree, and that degree holders become alumni of IIT Madras.

Can I study DS and MG at the same time?

The MG pages do not say. The ES FAQ rules out doing ES and DS together because their exam dates line up. Ask support before you plan two programmes. See two IITM BS degrees at once.

Is MG easier than DS?

No one can say yet. The qualifier is the same, and after that the courses are just different: more programming in DS, more management and business analytics in MG.
