Research Internships for IITM BS Students: How to Find One

The student handbooks do not describe a research internship scheme run by the IITM BS programme. You find research internships the same way other students do: through calls from labs and institutes, and by writing to professors. Each call has its own rules on who can apply, so read them before you apply. The handbook does add a few rules that matter here. They cover when you may list IIT Madras on a paper, how research can earn BS credits, and how project work can lead to an MS.

What the official reports show

The Batch 2024 and Batch 2025 Summaries for Data Science include short comments from students. Several mention research work, such as:

• Internships and project roles in IIT Madras labs and centres
• A research internship at IISc
• Research internships abroad, including a funded one in Canada, and others with groups in the USA and Norway
• A post-baccalaureate research fellowship that the student later converted into an MS by research

These are individual stories chosen for the reports. They are not a count or a typical outcome, and no official number of research internships is published.

Where research internships come from

• Calls from institutes and labs. Many institutes and research centres announce summer or short-term research internships. Read the eligibility closely: year of study, type of degree, minimum marks, and whether they accept students of online programmes. If it is unclear, email the contact person and ask before you apply.
• Writing to a professor. Some internships start with a direct, polite email to a faculty member whose work fits your skills.
• Project staff roles. Faculty projects sometimes hire project staff. At IIT Madras, this is also a route into the MS (see below).
• The BS level apprenticeship. The Data Science handbook says the BS level apprenticeship can be with companies or on research projects. A full 8 months earns 12 credits in Data Science, at Rs 5,000 per credit. See the IITM BS apprenticeship.

How to write to a professor

This is advice, not an official rule.

1. Read two or three recent papers or project pages from the lab. Pick one idea you understood.
2. Keep the email short. Say who you are: the programme, your level, and your CGPA if it helps you.
3. Show what you have done. Link one or two projects or a GitHub profile.
4. Say what you are asking for: the months you are free, how many hours a week, and whether you can work in person or only remotely.
5. Attach a one-page CV.
6. Send one polite follow-up after a week or two. Do not send the same email to every professor in a department.

Be honest that you are in an online BS programme and at which level. It saves time for both of you.

Handbook rules that apply to research work

Paper affiliation

You may list "IIT Madras" or "IIT Madras BS Degree" on a paper only if a faculty member or instructor officially associated with the institute guided the work. Independent work goes under your own name. Misusing the name can lead to action as serious as cancellation of your registration. Details in the research paper policy.

Project staff to MS

If you are appointed as project staff with an IIT Madras faculty member, you may apply for the MS through project admission. You need two approved campus courses with a CGPA of at least 7.5 and at least a C in each. No GATE score or minimum BS CGPA is needed, and your pay comes from the project. MS upgrade with a research project

With a CGPA of 8 or more after at least 106 credits, Data Science students can apply to finish the BS level at the Department of DSAI, IIT Madras. Selected students do an 8 month research project, counted under the 12 credit apprenticeship. See the MS upgrade.

Letters from the programme

Some calls ask for a letter from your institute. The handbooks say students who have not submitted the medical certificate get no letters of support or bonafide certificates. Submit it early. See the medical certificate rule.

Common questions

Can Foundation students get research internships?

The handbooks set no level rule for internships you find yourself. Each lab or institute decides who it takes. In practice, you will have a better chance once you have skills and projects to show.

Will a research internship earn me credits?

Only if it is approved as an apprenticeship at the BS level. The Data Science handbook allows research projects for this. It does not describe credits for research internships at other levels.

Can I publish the work from my internship?

Yes, but follow the affiliation rule. Use IIT Madras as your affiliation only if IIT Madras faculty guided the work. If your guide was at another institute, list that institute as they advise, not IIT Madras.

Does the IITM placement cell post research internships?

The portal's FAQ says companies, institutes and NGOs can register as recruiters, so a research opening could appear there. You need at least one diploma for internship support. The public pages give no count of research openings, so keep watching lab calls too.
