IITM BS Make Up Exams: Who Can Apply, Fees and Rules

A make-up exam in IITM BS lets you write a missed end term in the next term. It is only for courses marked I (Incomplete), which means you were eligible for the end term but did not write it. You rewrite only the end term, and you get just one chance. The fee is Rs 1,000 per foundation course and Rs 2,000 per diploma or degree course.

These rules come from both the Data Science (DS) and Electronic Systems (ES) handbooks. One ES fee is stated two ways, explained below.

Who can take a make-up exam

You can take a make-up exam only for a course with an I grade. You get I when you met the end term conditions (assignment average of 40 or more, at least one quiz attended) but were absent for the end term.

A make-up is not open to other grades:

• WA or WQ: you were not eligible for the end term, so you repeat the full course.
• U: you wrote the end term but your total was below 40, so you repeat the full course.
• Missed quiz: there is no make-up quiz at all. A missed quiz counts as 0.

The handbook sections on make-up exams do not ask for a reason for your absence, and they do not list any documents. The only condition they name is the I grade.

Make-up exam fees

For a regular course, the fee is per course:

About the ES foundation fee. The ES handbook text says Rs 1,000 for a foundation course. But its table for courses with OPPE lists Rs 2,000 for the "repeat end term alone" option at foundation level. The DS handbook has no such gap. If you are an ES student, confirm the fee on the registration page or with support.

When and how you take it

• Only in the next term. You write the end term whenever it is held in the term right after. If you skip that term, the make-up option is gone and you must repeat the whole course.
• Only once. If you miss the make-up exam too, you repeat the full course in the term after that. You pay the full course fee and redo all assignments, quizzes and the end term.
• Your old marks carry over. You do not resubmit assignments or rewrite quizzes. Your quiz score carries over.
• Same formula as before. Your make-up is graded with the formula from the term you did the course work, not the term you write the make-up.
• You register for it. You pick it as a course option when you register for the next term. See the course registration steps.

The handbook does not give a separate deadline for make-up exams. Register for it within the next term's normal registration window.

Make-up exams, CCC and the 4-exam limit

A make-up exam does not count toward your Credit Clearing Capability (CCC). But it does take a final exam slot. You can write at most 4 final exams in a term, counting full courses and make-ups together.

So if you already registered for 4 courses, you have no slot left for a make-up. Plan your next term around this. Our post on CCC explains the course limit.

Make-up or full repeat?

With an I grade you can choose either option.

The make-up means far less work. A full repeat is the choice if you also want to redo your assignment and quiz marks. See repeating a course for that path.

Common questions

I missed Quiz 2. Can I take a make-up quiz?

No. The handbook says no make-up quiz is given. The missed quiz counts as 0. You stay eligible for the end term if you attended the other quiz and met the assignment rule.

Can I take the make-up exam two terms later?

No. It must be in the next term. If you skip that term, you have to repeat the full course, including assignments and quizzes.

I missed the end term in all four courses. What can I do?

You can take make-up exams for all four in the next term. But that fills all 4 final exam slots, so no new course with an end term fits in that term. Your CCC from the previous term carries forward because you were absent for all courses.

Do I have to explain why I missed the end term?

The handbook does not ask for a reason or proof for a make-up exam. Being absent with an I grade is the condition. If your registration page asks for something extra, follow it.
