IITM BS Exam Centre Policy: How Centres Are Chosen

In IITM BS, you choose 2 exam cities from a list when you register for courses each term. The exam centre you are given is printed on your hall ticket, and you must go only to that centre. If you turn up at any other centre, you will not be allowed in, under any circumstances. Students appearing from outside India through remote proctoring must declare their location correctly. The rules are the same for Data Science (DS) and Electronic Systems (ES).

How you choose your exam cities

This happens during course registration, not later.

• When you register for courses, you pick 2 cities from the list offered, for that term's quizzes and exams.
• You can pick different cities from the ones you chose in earlier terms.
• You can also pick a different set of cities for each quiz and for the final exam, all at registration time.
• Slots are then booked with the exam vendor in the cities you picked.

Which exams are in person

The handbooks describe weekly assignments as online, while quizzes and end term exams are in-person and proctored. More on the quizzes in IITM BS Quiz 1 and Quiz 2.

The centre policy inside India

The policy was last updated on 15 July 2025.

• Report only to the exam centre on your hall ticket.
• Going to any other centre is strictly not allowed.
• If you arrive at a centre that is not yours, you will not be let in and cannot write the exam.

There is no walk-in option at a nearer centre, even if it is in the same city. Check the centre address on your hall ticket a day or two before the exam and plan your travel.

The policy for students outside India

The policy has a separate part for students appearing from outside India through remote proctoring. During the verification step you must confirm your location. If you fail to declare that you are in India, or you misrepresent where you are, you will not be allowed to take the exam and it will be treated as malpractice. Can you change your centre later?

The handbooks do not describe any way to change your exam centre after the hall ticket is issued. The choice you make is the cities at registration time. If something goes badly wrong, contact the support team as early as you can, but do not count on a change.

What if you miss an exam?

• Quiz: a quiz you do not attempt is scored 0, and there is no make-up quiz. You must attend at least one of the two quizzes to be allowed to write the end term exam (check the grading document of your term for changes).

Exam dates can clash with other programmes

The exam dates for IITM BS, IITM's web-enabled MTech programmes and some NPTEL courses can fall on the same day. The handbooks say it is your job to check for clashes before you sign up for any extra course or programme. No special arrangements will be made. See what to do if two exams clash.

Common questions

Can I write the quiz in one city and the end term exam in another?

Yes. At registration you can choose a different set of cities for each quiz and for the final exam, so the vendor can book slots in each.

Do I get the same exam city every term?

Not automatically. You choose your cities afresh at each registration, and you are free to choose different ones from earlier terms.

Where do I find my exam centre address?

It is on your hall ticket. The policy says you must report only to the centre named there.

Is the policy different for Electronic Systems students?

No. The ES handbook has the same exam centre policy, updated on the same date, and the same rule of picking two cities at registration.
