Missed an IITM BS End Term Exam? Make-Up Exam vs Repeating

If you were eligible for the end term but did not write it, your grade is I (Incomplete). In the next term you then have two choices. You can write only the end term, called a make-up exam, for Rs 1,000 per foundation course or Rs 2,000 per diploma or degree course. Or you can repeat the whole course at the normal course fee. The make-up is allowed only once, and only in the very next term.

What it costs in rupees

The DS academics page and both handbooks give the end-term-only fee as Rs 1,000 per foundation course and Rs 2,000 per diploma or degree course. A full repeat costs the normal course fee. Here is how that compares, using the DS per-credit fees (before any fee waiver):

You may see a figure of Rs 3,000 for the make-up quoted online. The official fee is per course. Rs 3,000 could simply be a total, for example three foundation make-ups at Rs 1,000 each. Go by the amount on your registration page.

ES students: the ES handbook text gives Rs 1,000 for a foundation course, but its OPPE table lists Rs 2,000 for "end term alone" at foundation level. Confirm the ES amount with support.

When a full repeat makes more sense

A make-up keeps your old quiz and assignment marks, good or bad. So work out what the end term must give you. The handbook says the end term is 50% of T, so everything else adds up to at most 50.

• Your other marks total 30 out of 50. You need only 10 out of 50 in the end term to reach 40. The make-up is the obvious choice.
• Your other marks total 12 out of 50. You need 28 out of 50 to reach 40, and 38 out of 50 to reach 50. If your quizzes went badly, a full repeat lets you redo them, but at the full fee.

We use both 40 and 50 because official sources disagree on the pass line. See is the pass mark 40 or 50. Also note that a make-up is graded with the formula of the term in which you did the course work, not the term of the make-up.

Rules you cannot bend

• Next term only. Skip that term and you must repeat the whole course.
• Once only. If you miss the make-up too, you repeat the full course in the term after, at full fee.
• Four final exams at most. Full courses and make-ups together cannot go above 4 in a term. If you register for 4 courses, you have no slot left for a make-up.
• Choose it at registration. The handbooks give no separate deadline. The make-up is one of the options when you register for the next term.

Worked example: planning the next term

Say you took 3 foundation courses last term. You passed 1 and missed the end term in the other 2, so both show I. Next term you could:

1. Take 2 make-ups for Rs 2,000 in total. They do not use CCC, but they use 2 of your 4 final exam slots.
2. Add up to 2 new courses with the slots left.

Watch your checkpoints

An I grade means the course is not complete, so it does not count toward the foundation or diploma checkpoints until you pass it. If you miss end terms in the term a checkpoint falls due, you may miss the checkpoint itself. Read foundation level checkpoints and what an ineligible for registration notice means.

Common questions

Do I need a medical certificate or a reason to take a make-up?

The handbooks do not ask for a reason or any proof. The only condition they name is the I grade. If your registration page asks for something extra, follow it.

What if I miss the make-up exam as well?

You then have to repeat the entire course in the term after that. You pay the full course fee and redo all assignments, quizzes and the end term.

Will missing all my end terms reduce my CCC?

No. The handbook says if you are absent for the final exam of every course, your CCC for the next term stays the same as your last term's CCC. At the foundation level, CCC is only a recommendation now anyway.
