What If I Fail the IITM BS Qualifier? It Is Not the End

Failing the IITM BS qualifier is common, and it is fixable. If you had a hall ticket and failed or missed the first exam, you can write the second exam at the end of week 8 in the same term, without redoing any assignments. If you never got a hall ticket, you can apply again in any later term, and there is no limit on how many times you try.

What matters now is what you change before the next try.

How common it is to not qualify

IIT Madras's Data Science Program Report (September 2025, updated 31 October 2025) gives the official numbers.

• From January 2021 to September 2025, 72,449 of 200,446 first applications ended in a pass. That is 36.15%.
• Counting re-applications, the report gives 251,456 applications in all. So there were 51,010 re-applications on top of the first ones. Trying again is normal.

The share that qualifies also moves a lot from term to term:

The percentages are our own division of the report's numbers. They count everyone who applied, including people who stopped the weekly work or never got a hall ticket. So they are not the pass rate of those who wrote the exam. The report does not give that figure, or any Electronic Systems figures. More in how hard the qualifier is.

The fees

These are from the official admissions pages as of September 2026.

The ES admissions page puts EWS in the Rs 4,000 group. The application fee is not refunded if you miss or fail the exam.

What to change before the next attempt

1. Find the course that failed you. A General candidate needs at least 40% in every course and a 50% average. OBC-NCL and EWS need 35% and 45%. SC, ST and PwD need 30% and 40%. One weak course is enough to fail. If that was your case, read failed one subject in the qualifier.
2. If you missed the hall ticket, fix the assignments. You need an average of 40% (General) in each of the four courses. In Data Science, your week 1 and week 2 average decides whether you can write the first exam.
3. Plan real hours. The DS academics page expects about 10 hours per foundation course per week, and the qualifier runs four courses at once.
4. Practise one full sitting. The exam covers all four courses in one go. Do a timed mock with questions from each course.
5. Check your numbers early. Put your expected marks into the qualifier score calculator to spot a weak course before exam day.

The time cost is smaller than it feels

There are three terms a year, starting in January, May and September, and each term has a qualifier. So a fresh attempt is never more than a few months away. If you pass in the first exam of a term, you can even start courses in that same term. See how the three admission cycles work.

Common questions

Is there a limit on how many times I can take the qualifier?

No. The handbook says there is no limit on the number of times you can go through the qualifier process. Each new term counts as a fresh application with the full fee.

Will failing the qualifier affect me after I join?

The handbook mentions no effect of earlier failed attempts. Once you qualify, the passing attempt's scores are the ones used, and in your first term they count as Quiz 1 and your first 4 assignment scores.

Can I skip the qualifier some other way?

If you qualified to appear for JEE Advanced, you can join the foundation level directly. Data Science also has a direct diploma entry for people with 2 years of a UG degree. Neither is a shortcut for everyone.

Should I wait a term before trying again?

Only if you need time to prepare. The qualifier always covers the first 4 weeks of the same four foundation courses, so a term spent revising basic maths and working through the free week 1 content can help you start stronger.
