The Real Cost of Failing a Course in IITM BS (Money and Time)

Failing an IITM BS course means repeating the whole course in a later term and paying the full course fee again. For a Data Science (DS) foundation course on the fees for students joining from January 2026, that is Rs 6,000. If you did the coursework but missed only the end term exam, the cost is much lower: a make-up exam for Rs 1,000 (foundation) or Rs 2,000 (diploma or degree).

The bigger cost is often time, because the checkpoint clock keeps running.

Which grade you got decides the cost

The make-up exam is allowed only once, and only in the term right after. If you skip that term, you must repeat the whole course. Details in repeating a course and make-up exams.

What a repeat costs in DS

A full repeat costs the same as the regular course fee. These examples use 4-credit courses and the per-credit rates in the DS handbook.

Diploma courses do not all carry 4 credits, so check the credits of your course and multiply by your rate. The per-credit rates are in the DS fee guide.

The smaller fees are the same for both fee structures:

Electronic Systems (ES) uses its own per-credit rates, for example Rs 2,000 or Rs 1,500 a credit at the foundation level. The repeat rules and the Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 make-up fees are the same.

A worked example

Say you joined DS in January 2026 and take two foundation courses in a term. You pass one. In the other you submit the assignments and write both quizzes, but miss the end term because you are ill.

• Option 1: make-up exam next term. Rs 1,000. Your assignment and quiz marks carry over. You write only the end term.
• Option 2: repeat the course. Rs 6,000, and you redo every assignment, quiz and exam.

Now say you did write the end term and scored a U. There is no make-up option. You pay Rs 6,000 and repeat everything in a later term.

The time cost

• It uses a later term's capacity. A full repeat counts as one of your courses for the term. You can sit at most 4 final exams in a term, make-ups included.
• It can push you towards a checkpoint. For DS students admitted from May 2024, you need at least 4 foundation courses in 4 terms, 6 in 6 and all 8 in 9. A fail late in that window is the risky kind.
• It counts against the time limits. Repeats must fit within the level limits and the 8-year programme limit.

The effect on CGPA, improvement and prizes

• CGPA. Your CGPA uses the best grade across all attempts of a course. A U followed by a later B counts as B. Your term GPA for the failed term still includes the U, and the progress card lists every attempt. See how CGPA is calculated.
• Improvement is different from a repeat. Improving a grade you already passed costs double the course fee, and from January 2026 only while you are still in that level. See grade improvement.
• Prizes. The prize rules look at your CGPA and a clean disciplinary record. They do not say a failed attempt rules you out.

How to keep the cost low

1. Attend at least one quiz and keep your assignment average above 40. That keeps the cheaper I grade possible if exam day goes wrong.
2. If you miss an end term, register for the make-up in the very next term.
3. If a course is going badly by week 4, dropping it within 4 weeks returns part of the fee to your student wallet. IITM keeps Rs 2,000 per foundation course and Rs 4,000 per diploma or degree course.

Common questions

Do I pay a penalty on top of the course fee for a repeat?

No penalty is listed. The handbook says the repeat fee is the same as the regular course fee. Improvement, which is repeating a course you passed, costs double.

Will a failed course show on my transcript?

The term-wise progress card lists every attempt and grade. The grade card shows each course once, with your best result.

Can I repeat a failed foundation course after I move to the diploma?

You need all 8 foundation courses to enter the diploma, so a failed foundation course must be passed first. The rule that blocks later attempts applies to improving grades you already passed.

Is the make-up exam easier than repeating?

It is cheaper and shorter, because your assignment and quiz marks carry over. It is graded with the formula of the term you did the coursework in.
