IITM BS Electronic Systems Checkpoints: Foundation and Diploma

The IITM BS in Electronic Systems has progress checkpoints at the foundation and diploma levels. At the foundation, you must pass at least 4 courses in 4 terms, at least 6 in 6 terms, and all 9 courses plus 5 labs within 9 terms. The diploma must be finished within 12 terms, with checkpoints at 3, 6 and 9 terms. Miss a hard checkpoint and you are removed from the programme.

Foundation level checkpoints

From term 3, you get warnings if your progress is too slow.

The handbook does not say whether labs count as "courses" for the 4-term and 6-term checkpoints. At the diploma level, the 11 "courses" include the 3 labs, so labs may count here too. Confirm with support if you are close to the line.

CCC is now only a guide at the foundation level

The credit clearing capability (CCC) used to decide how many courses you could take in a foundation term, based on how many you passed in your last 2 terms. Because missing a checkpoint now means removal, CCC at the foundation level is only a recommendation. It is not enforced. This lets you take more courses to catch up after a break. Diploma level time limit

You now have 12 terms to finish the diploma, up from 9. This applies to everyone, starting with the first batch that began the diploma in May 2024. The limit for the BS level stays at 9 terms.

Diploma level checkpoints

Terms are counted from the term you start the diploma.

The 11 courses are the 8 diploma theory courses and 3 diploma labs. The 2 projects are the Electronics System Project and the Signal Processing Project. The list is in ES diploma courses.

At the 3-term checkpoint you can still register for courses. The warning is there so you can fix your study plan. The handbook promises alerts and warnings before each checkpoint.

There is one mismatch. The text under the 3-term checkpoint says you must finish 6 courses and 2 projects within 6 terms. The 6-term checkpoint itself says 6 courses and 1 project. Plan for the stricter version to be safe.

Who the checkpoints apply to

The wording here is confusing. For both levels, the handbook says the checkpoints apply to students admitted from May 2026. The very next sentence says they do not apply to students who entered in the May 2026 term or before. If you joined in May 2026 exactly, ask support which rule covers you.

Improving grades inside a level

From the January 2026 term, you can repeat a course to improve its grade only while you are still in that level. Once you start the diploma, you cannot take a foundation improvement course. Your CGPA for a level is frozen when you move up. See grade improvement rules.

Common questions

Does taking a term off stop the checkpoint clock?

The handbook counts terms from when you start the level. It does not say that a break pauses the count. Since CCC is no longer enforced at the foundation level, you can take extra courses later to catch up.

Are the foundation checkpoints the same for DS students?

This post follows the ES handbook, and the 9 courses plus 5 labs rule is specific to ES. Data Science students should read the foundation checkpoints for their programme.

How do I avoid hitting a checkpoint?

Take at least 2 courses a term at the foundation level, and do not skip lab terms. The ES study plans all clear the foundation well before 9 terms.
