Applying to IITM BS From Outside India: Fees and Exams

You can apply to IITM BS from outside India. If you write your exams overseas, you pay an extra exam facilitation fee on top of the normal fees. It is Rs 2,000 for each quiz and Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 for the end term exams, and it can be higher in some countries. A facilitation fee also applies to the qualifier exam if you write it at a centre outside India.

Can you apply from another country?

Yes. The Electronic Systems (ES) handbook says anyone who meets the eligibility rules can apply regardless of geographical location. The Data Science (DS) handbook lets anyone who meets its rules apply regardless of age or academic background, and it has a separate fee section for students outside India. The exam facilitation fee

Both handbooks list this fee for candidates who write exams overseas. It is on top of your normal course fees.

The handbooks give this example. If you take 4 courses in a term, you pay Rs 2,000 for Quiz 1, Rs 2,000 for Quiz 2 and Rs 4,000 for the end term. That is Rs 8,000 in facilitation fees for the term.

It can differ by country

The fee may vary by country. The handbooks name Kuwait and Bahrain as places where it is Rs 3,000. They do not say whether that figure replaces every Rs 2,000 item or only some of them, so check before you register. The ES handbook adds that these fees are fixed with the local exam partner in each place and can change from time to time.

The qualifier from outside India

• Application fee: you pay the normal qualifier application fee for your category. For General candidates it is Rs 4,000. See the qualifier application fee.
• Extra fee: the ES handbook says that if you choose an exam centre outside India for the qualifier exam, a facilitation fee is added to the application fee.
• Reapplying: if you do not become eligible and apply again in a later term, the DS and ES handbooks both say you pay the full fee again, plus the facilitation fee if you are outside India.

The handbooks do not state the facilitation fee amount for the qualifier exam separately. Check the fee shown on the application form.

Remote proctoring and location checks

The exam centre policy in both handbooks has a section for students appearing from outside India through remote proctoring. The key rule is about your location:

• You must verify your location during the verification step before the exam.
• If you fail to declare that you are in India, or you misrepresent your location, you will not be allowed to take the exam.
• Such a case is treated as malpractice.

So remote proctoring is meant for students who are outside India.

One thing is unclear. The fee section talks about overseas exam partners and exam centres abroad, while the exam policy talks about remote proctoring from outside India. The handbooks do not say which exams use which method. Confirm with the support team before you register. The general centre rules are in the exam centre policy.

Electronic Systems needs visits to IIT Madras

Do Data Science students outside India need to visit IIT Madras?
