Who Can Apply for IITM BS? Eligibility for DS and ES

You can apply for the IITM BS in Data Science (DS) if you studied Maths and English in Class 10 and have either passed Class 12 or appeared for your Class 11 final exams. Any stream and any board is fine. For the BS in Electronic Systems (ES), you need Physics and Maths in Class 12, or you must have passed them separately through NIOS or an equivalent. Neither programme has an age limit.

Data Science eligibility in detail

The DS handbook sets a basic minimum: you should have studied Mathematics and English in Class 10. On top of that, you must be in one of two groups.

• Class 12 passed (or an equivalent): you can apply whatever your age or academic background. If you qualify, you can join straight away. The official website has a list of accepted Class 12 equivalents.
• School students: if you have appeared for your Class 11 final exams, you can apply. Your group, stream or board does not matter. If you qualify, you can join only after passing Class 12.

The handbook says nothing more is needed to apply for the qualifier or to join the foundation courses after clearing it. So commerce, arts and science students can all apply for DS.

Electronic Systems eligibility in detail

ES asks for Physics and Maths.

• Class 12 passed with Physics and Maths: you can apply and, if you qualify, join right away.
• Class 12 passed without Physics and Maths: you can still apply if you pass Maths and Physics separately through NIOS or an equivalent.
• School students: you can apply if you have appeared for (or completed) your Class 11 exams with Physics and Maths as subjects. You join only after passing Class 12.

The ES handbook says anyone in these groups can apply regardless of age, other academic background, job role or location.

What if you are still in school?

You can take the qualifier while you are in Class 12. The validity rule for your score is a little different. For a Class 12 student, the qualifier score stays valid for 3 terms counted from when you pass Class 12, not from the exam date. So you do not lose your result while you finish school. Other ways in

• JEE route: if you qualified to appear for JEE Advanced, you can join the foundation level without writing the qualifier exam. This works for DS and ES. See IITM BS through JEE.
• Direct diploma entry (DS only): if you have completed 2 years of any UG degree, you can apply straight to the DS diploma level through a separate exam. See direct entry to the diploma level. ES has no such route.

The application fee

Applying for the qualifier costs Rs 4,000 for General, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates, Rs 2,000 for SC, ST or PwD (40% or more disability), and Rs 1,000 for SC/ST candidates who are also PwD. The ES handbook fee table and the official admissions page give these amounts, though one line in the ES handbook says Rs 6,000 for General. Full details are in the qualifier application fee.

Common questions

I am 35 and working. Can I apply?

Yes. Both handbooks say you can apply regardless of age. DS also says academic background does not matter once you meet the basic rules, and ES says your job role and location do not matter.

I studied commerce without Maths in Class 12. Can I do ES?

Not directly. ES needs Physics and Maths in Class 12. The handbook allows students who passed Class 12 without them to apply if they pass Maths and Physics separately through NIOS or an equivalent. DS has no such subject rule for Class 12.

Can I apply if I dropped out of college?

For the regular qualifier route, the handbooks only ask about Class 10, Class 11 and Class 12. College results are not part of the rule. College years matter only for DS direct diploma entry, which needs 2 completed years of a UG degree.

Is there any minimum percentage in Class 12?

The handbooks do not mention any minimum Class 12 marks. They only list the subject and pass requirements shown above.
