How the IITM BS Qualifier Process Works (DS and ES)

The IITM BS qualifier is 4 weeks of real course work followed by an exam. You get 4 weeks of content in four foundation courses, you submit a graded assignment every week in each course, and if your assignment scores are high enough you get a hall ticket for an in-person qualifier exam. Pass that exam and you can join the foundation level. Data Science (DS) and Electronic Systems (ES) follow the same pattern, but with different courses and a slightly different hall ticket rule.

Which courses are in the qualifier?

Each programme uses its own four foundation courses.

One small thing: the ES handbook calls the maths course "Maths for Electronics 1" in one place and "Mathematics 1" in another. Both names point to the first maths course of the ES foundation level.

What happens in the 4 weeks

• Access to the content opens on the start date of week 1.
• Content comes out week by week. For DS it includes videos, tutorials, practice assignments, graded assignments and text transcripts.
• Each release is announced on the portal and you also get an email alert.
• Every week you must submit one graded assignment in each of the four courses, before the deadline.
• Each graded assignment is marked out of 100. An assignment you do not attempt gets 0.

How you get a hall ticket

Only students who reach a minimum average assignment score in all four courses get a hall ticket. The cutoff is the same for DS and ES:

The weeks used are different:

• DS: first, the average of week 1 and week 2 is checked. If you clear the cutoff in all four courses, you can write the first qualifier exam of the term. If not, the average of your best 2 out of the first 3 weeks is checked. Clearing it then makes you eligible for the second exam of the term.
• ES: the average of your best 2 out of the first 3 weekly assignments is used in each course.

The qualifier exam

The exam is written in person at an exam centre, with invigilation. It covers the content of the 4 weeks. The ES handbook says it is one 4-hour exam for all four subjects together. The DS handbook lines do not give the length.

There are two qualifier exams in every term. The first is at the end of week 4. The second is at the end of week 8.

After the exam

Your marks show up in your portal login, and you get an email alert. If you qualified, you are told by email, WhatsApp and the portal whether you can register further, and an admission letter is generated for you.

If you had a hall ticket but missed the first exam or failed it, you can take the second exam in the same term without redoing the assignments. The details and fees are in the second attempt rules.

If you pass in the first exam of the term, you can start your courses in that same term. If you pass in the second exam, you start from the next term.

Common questions

Do the lower category cutoffs continue after I join?

No. The handbooks say the relaxed cutoffs apply only to the qualifier. Once you are registered in the programme, the same grades and pass rules apply to everyone.

Is the fee returned if I miss the exam or fail?

No. The handbooks say the qualifier fee is not refunded to people who were absent or who did not pass.

Does my qualifier work count after I join?

Yes, for your first term right after the qualifier. Your qualifier exam score is treated as your Quiz 1 score and your qualifier assignment scores count as your first 4 assignment scores in the courses you register for.

Is it a lot of work to handle four courses at once?
