IITM BS Qualifier Result: When and How It Is Announced

Your IITM BS qualifier marks appear inside your login on the student portal. You also get an alert by email, and both handbooks mention WhatsApp messages too. If you qualified, you are told whether you can register further, and an admission letter is generated for you. The handbooks do not give a fixed number of days between the exam and the result, so watch the portal and your email.

How the result reaches you

There is a small difference in wording between the two handbooks. The Data Science (DS) handbook says marks come with an email and a WhatsApp alert. The Electronic Systems (ES) handbook mentions only the email alert in its marks section, but its results section says qualified candidates are told by email, WhatsApp and the portal. In practice, check all three.

When the result comes out

Each term has two qualifier exams: one at the end of week 4 and one at the end of week 8. Each exam has its own result. The handbooks do not state how many days after the exam the result is published. They only say that the re-attempt form opens right after the result of the first exam is announced. What the result tells you

• Your marks in the qualifier exam.
• Whether you qualified. Qualified candidates are told if they are eligible to register further.
• Your admission letter, if you qualified.

To check a result yourself, compare each course score and your average against the cutoffs in the qualifier passing marks. For General candidates it is 40% in each course and a 50% average.

What to do next if you qualified

1. Decide when to join. If you passed in the first exam of the term, you can register in the same term or in the next 2 terms while your score is valid. If you passed in the second exam, you can join only from the next term.
2. Check your course limit. For your first term, the number of courses you can take depends on your qualifier marks, unless you join in the same term, where it is 4. Read how many courses you can take after qualifying.
3. Register and pay. Follow the course registration steps when the window opens.

Your score is valid for 3 terms. While it is valid, you cannot apply for the qualifier again.

What to do next if you did not qualify

• Failed or absent in the first exam, but had a hall ticket: apply for the second exam of the same term. The form opens right after the result. You do not redo assignments. The fee is Rs 2,000 for General and OBC, Rs 1,000 for SC, ST or PwD, and Rs 500 for SC/ST candidates who are also PwD. See the second attempt.
• Failed the second exam too: the handbooks have no separate section for this. They do say there is no limit on how many times you can go through the qualifier process, so you can apply again in a later term as a fresh applicant.

The qualifier fee is not refunded if you were absent or did not pass.

Common questions

I qualified but cannot find my admission letter. What should I do?

The handbooks say an admission letter is generated for every qualified candidate. If you cannot see it in your portal or email, raise a support ticket rather than waiting. Keep your application details handy.

Does the result tell me my rank?

The handbooks talk about marks and a qualified or not qualified outcome. They do not mention any rank.

Can I ask for my qualifier paper to be rechecked?

The handbook sections on the qualifier do not describe any revaluation or recheck process. Ask the support team if you believe there is an error in your marks.
