Could IIT Madras Stop or Change the BS Degree? What Protects Students

There is no official sign that IIT Madras plans to stop the BS programme. The official record points the other way: tens of thousands of active students, rising completions, and two new BS programmes launched in 2026. What can change, and often does, is the rules. The handbook says its policies may change without notice, so the practical risk is a rule change, not a shutdown.

We will not guess about the future. Here is what the official record shows, and what you can do to protect yourself either way.

What the official record shows

None of this is a promise about the future. It does show an institute adding programmes, not closing them.

What makes the degree solid in law

The degree is awarded by IIT Madras itself. The Electronic Systems FAQ explains that IITs are created under an Act of Parliament, the IIT Act, which gives them the right to confer degrees, and that any degree granted by an IIT is a legal degree. An award you have already received is an IIT Madras award, whatever happens to the programme later. See is IITM BS a real IIT degree.

What can change, and how it has changed so far

The handbook is open about this. It says all information, including policies and procedures, is subject to change without notice. Since 2024, most big changes were tied to a joining term, so students already in the programme kept their old terms:

• Fees. The January 2026 fee revision applies to students joining foundation from January 2026. Earlier students stay on the old fees.
• Checkpoints. The Data Science foundation and diploma checkpoints apply to students admitted from May 2024, not to those who entered in January 2024 or before.
• Degree entry. The 15-term limit to reach the degree level applies to students joining from May 2026.

Some changes did apply to everyone. From January 2026, grade improvement is allowed only within your current level. The medical certificate and POSH training became compulsory for all. Registration can now be blocked if a checkpoint is out of reach. The full list is in every major rule change since 2024.

What protects you in practice

The strongest protection is the programme's design. You do not have to finish all four years to hold something official.

• Each level has its own award. A foundation certificate, one or more diplomas, and in Data Science a BSc before the BS. See certificates at each level.
• Credit completion letters. From the January 2026 term, when you finish the credits for a level, you get a credit completion letter signed by the programme coordinators. See credit completion letters.
• Your record is always available. The dashboard gives a term-wise progress card and a grade card, and you can request official transcripts. See academic documents.

Steps you can take now

1. Download your documents every term. Save your progress card, grade card and fee receipts outside the portal.
2. Save the handbook when you register. Keep a copy of the rules that applied in each term you studied.
3. Read the "Updated on" dates. Check the handbook at the start of each term for new sections.
4. Aim to finish levels, not just courses. A completed level gives you a letter and an award. Half a level usually gives you neither.
5. Keep your contact details current. Alerts about rule changes and registration come by email and WhatsApp.

Common questions

What happens to my certificate if the programme ever ends?

We found no official policy on this, because no closure has been announced. An award you already hold is issued by IIT Madras under the IIT Act. That is why finishing each level and saving its documents matters.

Can IIT Madras change the rules after I join?

Yes. The handbook says policies can change without notice. Recent big changes mostly applied to new batches, but a few, such as the grade improvement limit, applied to everyone.

I heard rumours the degree will be stopped. Where do I check?

Only on official pages: study.iitm.ac.in, iitm.ac.in and the student handbook. We found no official statement about stopping the programme. Treat videos and forum posts as opinions until an official page says otherwise.

Should I wait to see if the rules settle down before joining?

Rules have kept changing since 2024, so waiting may not make them settle. It is better to read the current handbook, understand the rules that would apply to your batch, and decide on that basis.
