IITM BS Online vs IIT Madras Zanzibar BS: Not the Same Thing

They are two different programmes. The online IITM BS is studied from anywhere, with exams at centres, and you get in through the qualifier or JEE Advanced eligibility. IIT Madras Zanzibar is IIT Madras's campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, where students study in person, and it runs its own screening test. Each has its own admission, so apply to the one you actually want.

Why people mix them up

The names are close. The online programme is the BS in Data Science and Applications. The Zanzibar campus offers a BS in Data Science and AI. Both carry the IIT Madras name, and both are four-year bachelor's programmes.

These points come from IIT Madras press releases:

• IIT Madras describes it as the first international campus set up by any IIT.
• The first batch of the bachelor's and master's programmes in Data Science and AI was due to start classes in October 2023.
• In April 2026, admissions opened for the fourth batch. The programmes listed were a 4-year BS in Data Science and AI, a 2-year MTech in Data Science and AI, and a 4-year BS in Chemical Process Engineering.
• The BS screening test was scheduled for 6 June 2026, at centres in India and abroad.
• The campus began at a transit site in Bweleo. A permanent campus is being built on the Fumba peninsula, where a new hostel block opened in January 2026.

What this means for you

• The online BS rules, fees and qualifier scores apply only to the online BS. They say nothing about Zanzibar.
• The online BS handbooks describe no route between the online programme and the Zanzibar campus.

No. IIT Madras describes Zanzibar as a campus that welcomes each new batch of students, with a permanent campus and hostel being built. The online BS is the one you study from home.

Can I move from the online BS to the Zanzibar campus?

Can students from India apply to Zanzibar?
