IITM Online BS vs IIT Madras Campus Programmes

The IITM online BS is not a campus programme. You study online, write exams at centres, and as a student you do not get the use of campus facilities. IIT Madras's campus programmes, such as the BTech, MTech, MS and PhD, have their own admission routes. The online BS does touch the campus in a few ways: Electronic Systems labs, campus courses for credit, student events, and routes into the on-campus MS.

What IIT Madras says about the online BS

• The DS FAQ says there is no on-campus version of the programme. It was built only as an online programme.
• The same FAQ says students do not get access to campus facilities, because of limited facilities and students being spread across the country. You get an electronic ID card, with conditions on its use.
• IIT Madras says the curriculum, academic rigour and quality of the BS are on par with its regular degree programmes.
• The DS FAQ says BS credits cannot be transferred to other colleges. The handbooks describe no route from the BS into the campus BTech.

When BS students do come to campus

Electronic Systems labs

ES lab courses need in-person work at IIT Madras, about 1 to 2 weeks each semester. The ES FAQ says you arrange your own accommodation. See ES campus visits.

Aeronautics labs and an on-campus option

The Aeronautics and Space Technology page says students travel to IIT Madras for some lab courses at the Diploma and Degree levels. Degree level students may also apply for an option to take all degree level courses on campus in person.

Campus courses for credit (DS)

After the Foundation and both diplomas, DS students with a CGPA of 8 or more can take in-person courses at IIT Madras and other listed institutes, such as IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Palakkad, IIT Ropar, CMI and IIIT Hyderabad.

• Up to 24 credits can come from campus courses.
• You pay Rs 2,500 per BS credit to transfer, plus the host institute's own fee.
• You attend in person unless a hybrid option exists.
• Grades from IIT Madras campus courses count in your CGPA. Courses from other institutes count only as credits.

Events and convocation

IIT Madras held Paradox 2023, the BS students' fest, on campus from 25 to 28 May 2023, with more than 3,000 students. The BS convocation on 8 June 2025 was also held on campus. See the Paradox fest.

After you finish a BSc or BS and get the alumni card, the DS handbook says the card is needed for entry to the campus and for facilities such as library membership.

Routes from the BS into campus programmes

The main way into a campus programme is the MS. The handbooks list:

• MS upgrade. In DS, after 106 credits with a CGPA of 8 or more, you can apply in May or November. If selected through a test or interview, you do the BS level on campus (16 credits of courses and 12 of project), then may be admitted to the MS. In ES, you apply in April or October after 102 credits and the 4 core degree courses, with a CGPA of 8 or more. See the MS upgrade.
• MS as a CFTI student. With a BS CGPA of 8 or more, you can apply for the MS without GATE (DS handbook).
• MS as project staff. If you work as project staff with IIT Madras faculty.
• GATE. For an MTech, MS or PhD. The DS handbook calls this its most recommended option.

Our view

If daily campus life is what you want most, the online BS will not give it. The visits are short and have a purpose. If you want to reach the IIT Madras campus later, the realistic paths are a CGPA of 8 or more for the upgrade and CFTI routes, or a good GATE score.

Common questions

Can I stay in an IIT Madras hostel during ES lab visits?

No. The ES FAQ says you must make your own arrangements for accommodation during lab sessions.

Can I move to the campus BTech if I do well in the BS?

No. The handbooks describe no such route. The campus routes from the BS lead to the MS, not the BTech.

Can I use the IIT Madras library as a BS student?

The DS FAQ says BS students do not get access to campus facilities. The handbook mentions library membership only as an alumni card benefit, after a BSc or BS.
