How to Prepare for the IITM BS Qualifier Exam

The best preparation for the IITM BS qualifier is the official qualifier content itself. The exam is based on what is taught in the 4 weeks, and IIT Madras gives you that content week by week after you apply. So your job is simple: watch each week's material on time, submit every graded assignment, and revise as you go. You do not need outside material to know what the exam covers.

What the handbooks say about preparation

• The qualifier exam is based on the content covered in the 4 weeks of study.
• Once the qualifier starts, you get access to 4 weeks of content in four foundation courses.
• The content is released week by week. In Data Science (DS) it includes videos, tutorials, practice assignments, graded assignments and text transcripts.
• Each release is announced on the portal and by email.
• You must submit a graded assignment every week in every course. Each is marked out of 100, and a missed one is 0.
• The week 1 content is open to anyone on the official website, even before you apply.

A simple weekly plan

The advice below is practical, not an official rule.

Before you apply

Open the week 1 content on the website and go through at least one lecture per course. This shows you the level and pace. If it feels too fast, plan more study hours before the qualifier starts, not after.

During each week

1. Day 1 or 2: watch the new videos for all four courses. Do not let one course pile up.
2. Next: try the practice assignment for each course, where one is given. Check the solutions and note what you got wrong.
3. Then: attempt the graded assignment. Submit it well before the deadline, not in the last hour.
4. End of the week: spend one short session revising that week's notes and mistakes.

Four courses at once means four deadlines every week. A short daily study slot is easier to keep up than long weekend sessions.

Protect your hall ticket first

You only write the exam if your assignment average clears the cutoff in all four courses. That is 40% for General, 35% for OBC-NCL and EWS, and 30% for SC, ST and PwD. In DS, weeks 1 and 2 decide whether you can sit the first exam, so the first two weeks matter a lot. In Electronic Systems (ES), the best 2 of your first 3 weeks are used. Getting ready for the exam itself

• Revise from the official material. Rework the practice and graded assignments from all 4 weeks. The exam is built on this content.
• Give every course fair time. To pass, a General candidate needs at least 40% in each course and a 50% average. A weak course can fail you even if your average is good. Test sample marks in the qualifier score calculator.
• Practise under time. The ES handbook says the qualifier is one 4-hour exam for all four subjects together. Split evenly, that is about an hour per subject. The DS handbook lines do not state the length, so check your hall ticket and the official site.
• Do not skip English. It is one of the four courses, and it has its own minimum mark like the others.

If it does not work out the first time

If you get a hall ticket but miss or fail the first exam, you can take the second exam at the end of week 8 in the same term without redoing assignments. If you do not get a hall ticket, you can apply again in a later term, with no limit on attempts.

Do I need coaching for the IITM BS qualifier?

The handbooks do not mention any coaching. The exam is based on the 4 weeks of content IIT Madras provides, which includes videos, practice work and graded assignments.

How many hours a week should I study?

The handbooks do not give a number for the qualifier. Plan time for four courses each week: watching the lectures, doing the practice assignment and submitting the graded assignment. Use the week 1 sample to judge how long one week takes you.

Can I start preparing before the qualifier opens?
