IITM BS in Electronic Systems: Full Programme Overview

The IIT Madras BS in Electronic Systems (ES) is an online degree with three levels: Foundation, Diploma and BS degree. They carry 43, 43 and 56 credits, which makes 142 credits in all. Theory is taught through recorded videos. Quizzes and end term exams are written in person at exam centres, and lab courses need visits to the IIT Madras campus.

How is the ES programme structured?

One credit means 14 hours of learner work, as per the UGC system. It equals 3 credits in the current IIT Madras campus credit system. A 4-credit course usually runs for 12 weeks, with pre-recorded videos every week. You learn by watching them and reading the material the course team gives.

The handbook also splits credits by type. Foundation is 36 theory and 7 lab credits. Diploma is 32 theory, 9 lab and 2 project credits. For the BS level, the split table shows 16 theory, 1 lab and 44 elective credits, which adds up to 61, not 56. Treat 56 from the main table as the level total and confirm the split with the support team. An apprenticeship at the BS level is optional and replaces elective credits.

What can you exit with?

ES has three exit points:

1. Foundation level certificate in Electronic Systems
2. Diploma in Electronic Systems
3. BS degree in Electronic Systems

Unlike the Data Science programme, ES has no BSc level. Also remember that passing the qualifier only admits you to the Foundation courses. You earn the diploma or degree only after you finish the credits for it.

How do ES labs and campus visits work?

Lab courses are hybrid. You do the experiments at home by following process videos. Then you must come to IIT Madras in person to show the experiments and complete the lab course.

The handbook describes these visits in two ways. One part says they happen three times a year, generally in December to January, May to July and September to October. Do you need to buy a lab kit?

Yes. You are expected to get the lab kit that IIT Madras recommends so that you can do lab experiments at home. The kit details and cost are shared with students who register. The kit is bought separately and its cost is not part of the course fees. More in the ES lab kit guide.

Who can apply for ES?

• Anyone who has passed class 12 or equivalent with Physics and Maths in class 12.
• If you passed class 12 without Maths and Physics, you can pass those two subjects separately through NIOS or an equivalent board, and then apply.
• School students who have written their class 11 final exams, with Physics and Maths, can apply. They can join only after passing class 12.

There is no other condition. Age, other studies, job and location do not matter.

To get in, you go through the qualifier. You get 4 weeks of content in four Foundation subjects: Mathematics 1, Electronic Systems Thinking and Circuits, Introduction to C Programming and English 1. You submit weekly assignments, and if you reach the required average you write a 4-hour qualifier exam in person.

Can you join the ES diploma directly?

No. The ES handbook says nobody can register for the Diploma directly. Everyone starts at the Foundation level. This is different from Data Science, as explained in why ES has no direct diploma entry.

How much does ES cost?

These fees are for students who join from the January 2026 term. The handbook's total line says Rs 5,82,000, but its level totals and the ES academics page give Rs 5,80,000. Students who joined up to September 2025 pay the old total of Rs 5,74,000.

Students from SC, ST and PwD categories, and those with family income below Rs 5 lakh a year, can get fee waivers from IIT Madras. The lab kit is extra. Students writing exams outside India also pay a facilitation fee. The Electronic Systems fee guide has the waiver table.

The qualifier fee is not stated the same way everywhere. The fee table lists Rs 4,000 for general, EWS and OBC-NCL candidates. It lists Rs 2,000 for PwD (40% or more) or SC/ST, and Rs 1,000 for PwD who are also SC/ST. But one line in the same section says Rs 6,000 for general category. Check the official ES website before you pay.

Common questions

Do I have to go to IIT Madras for every course?

No. Theory courses are online, and you go to an exam centre for quizzes and end term exams. Only lab courses need the in-person visit to IIT Madras.

Can I apply for ES if I studied Biology instead of Maths in class 12?

Not directly. You need Maths and Physics. The handbook allows you to pass Maths and Physics separately through NIOS or an equivalent board, and then apply.

Is there a BSc exit in Electronic Systems?

No. ES has three exits: Foundation certificate, Diploma and BS degree. The BSc exit exists only in the Data Science programme.

How long does the BS in Electronic Systems take?

You need at least 4 years (12 terms) from your first term before the BS certificate is processed. Each level must be done within 3 years (9 terms), and the whole programme within 8 years (24 terms).
