IITM BS Electronic Systems Structure: 142 Credits Explained

The IITM BS in Electronic Systems needs 142 credits in total. They are split across three levels: foundation (43 credits), diploma (43 credits) and BS degree (56 credits). Each level has theory courses and lab courses. You can leave after any level and get the award for that level.

The three levels

Foundation plus diploma is 86 credits. The BS level adds the last 56.

The courses at each level are listed in ES foundation courses, ES diploma courses and ES degree courses.

Credits by type of course

The handbook also breaks each level down by type.

At the BS level, the apprenticeship is optional and its credits replace elective credits. NPTEL credits are also listed as optional, with details "to be decided".

The BS row does not add up. 16 + 1 + 44 is 61, not 56. The "12 theory courses and 1 lab" line gives 49 if every theory course is 4 credits. The diploma row also differs from the course list, which shows 7 lab credits and 4 project credits. The diploma total is 43 either way. For the BS level, ask support how many elective credits you actually need.

What one credit means

• The programme uses the UGC way of counting credits. One credit means about 14 hours of learner engagement.
• One credit here equals 3 credits in the newer IIT Madras credit system.
• A 4-credit theory course usually runs for 12 weeks, with recorded videos every week.

So a 4-credit course is about 56 hours of study time by this count.

Exits and certificates

There are three exit points: the foundation certificate, the diploma and the BS degree. You also choose your pace each term.

Keep these rules in mind:

• Each award covers only the level you cleared. Clearing the qualifier admits you to the foundation courses only, not to a degree.
• Being admitted to a level does not mean you will get its award. You get a diploma or degree only after earning the credits for it.
• From the January 2026 term, when you finish the credits for a level, the programme gives a credit completion letter signed by the programme coordinators.
• If you have filled the exit form and are waiting for your original certificate, you can ask for a provisional certificate. Write to academic.documents@study.iitm.ac.in (opens in a new tab).
• The design of the original certificates has not changed.

Minors inside the 142 credits

Minors fit within the 142 credits. You earn a minor only along with the BS degree. A separate document confirms it, and your transcript and degree certificate stay the same. You can earn more than one minor if you finish all its courses. The ES handbook lists four: Application Development and Machine Learning (from DS courses), and VLSI Design and Testing and IoT (from ES courses). See ES minors.

Common questions

How long does it take to earn 142 credits?

The handbook's suggested learning paths run from 9 terms at the fastest pace to 14 terms at the comfortable pace, with three terms a year. But the certificate section says the original BS certificate needs at least 4 years (12 terms) from your first term. See ES study plans for the term by term view.

Can I start directly at the diploma level?

No. The ES programme has no direct entry into the diploma. Every student begins at the foundation level after the qualifier.

Will my transcript show every attempt at a course?

There are two documents. The progress card lists every course and every attempt with its grade. The grade card lists each course once, with your best result.
