IITM BS Analog Electronics Laboratory (EE2104): Syllabus and Tips

Analog Electronics Laboratory (EE2104) is a 3 credit diploma lab in the IITM BS in Electronic Systems. Across six modules you build analog blocks, such as a ramp generator, a PWM modulator, an H-bridge driver, a band-pass filter and an adder, and then join them into one system. It goes with Analog Electronic Systems (EE2102), which is its corequisite.
| Code | Credits | Level | Prerequisites |
|---|---|---|---|
| EE2104 (EE2901 in the handbook) | 3 (0-0-3-3) | Diploma | Analog Electronic Systems (EE2102) as corequisite |
The syllabus lists three instructors from the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras: Prof. Saurabh Saxena, Prof. Nagendra and Prof. Janakiraman Viraraghavan.
Watch out for the code clash
The Sep 2025 syllabus gives this lab the code EE2104. In the handbook, the Analog Electronics Laboratory is EE2901, and EE2104 belongs to a different course: Computer Organisation, a 4 credit diploma course. Both sources agree the lab is worth 3 credits. When you register, go by the course name, not only the code.
What you need before the Analog Lab
Both handbook tables list no prerequisite and Analog Electronic Systems as a corequisite. So you take the theory course earlier or in the same term. That course needs Signals and Systems first. See Analog Electronic Systems (EE2102).
What you build in the Analog Lab
The syllabus lists six modules instead of weeks.
- Modules 1 and 2: making signals. A ramp generator, whose output rises steadily and then resets. Then a circuit that turns a single-ended input into a differential one, and a PWM modulator, which turns a signal into pulses whose width follows it.
- Module 3: driving a load. An H-bridge driver, a switch arrangement that can push current through a load in either direction, and joining it to the earlier blocks.
- Modules 4 and 5: shaping signals. A band-pass filter and an adder circuit.
- Module 6: top level integration. All the blocks are connected into one working system.
The syllabus does not name the final system, and it does not describe how the lab is graded.
Campus visit, kit and lab rules
- ES labs are hybrid: home experiments, then an in-person visit to IIT Madras. See how ES labs work.
- The handbook's study plans show the Analog Lab as 2 days on campus, in the same term as the 1 day Digital System Design Lab.
- The single lab rule is written in the foundation lab policy. The handbook does not say whether it covers diploma labs. Pairing this lab with another, as the study plans do, is the safe choice. See the single lab rule.
- Experiments at home use the ES lab kit, which works as a function generator and oscilloscope.
Who finds it hard and how to prepare
The biggest risk is the last module. Blocks that work on their own can fail once they are connected together.
- Test every module on its own and save its output waveform before you connect anything.
- Revise op-amp basics and the filter weeks of Analog Electronic Systems before modules 1 and 4.
- Build neatly, with short wires and a clear layout. You will reuse these blocks in module 6.
- When the joined system fails, split it again and test stage by stage from the input.
- Finish all the home experiments before your campus days. Two days is not much time to rebuild.
What to take before and after
After this lab, the Sensors Laboratory needs it as a prerequisite, and the Electronics System Project (EE3999) lists it as a corequisite. Plan the Analog Lab early, or both of those move back.
Common questions
Is EE2104 the Analog Lab or Computer Organisation?
It depends on the source. The Sep 2025 syllabus uses EE2104 for the Analog Electronics Laboratory. The handbook uses EE2104 for Computer Organisation and EE2901 for the Analog Lab. Check the course name on the registration page.
How long do I spend on campus for this lab?
The handbook's study plans show 2 days for the Analog Lab. The handbook says visits generally fall in December to January, May to July and September to October.
Can I take the Analog Lab before the theory course?
No. Analog Electronic Systems is a corequisite, so it must be done earlier or taken in the same term as the lab.
