Is There Direct Diploma Entry in IITM BS Electronic Systems?

No. The IITM BS in Electronic Systems (ES) has no direct entry into the diploma level. The ES handbook says students cannot register for the diploma directly, and everyone who joins must start from the foundation level. This is different from the Data Science (DS) programme, which does have a direct diploma route.

What ES students do instead

You start at the foundation level, like every other ES student. There are two ways to get there:

1. The regular qualifier. You study 4 weeks of content in English 1, Maths for Electronics 1, Electronic Systems Thinking and Circuits, and Introduction to C Programming. You submit weekly assignments, earn a hall ticket, and pass an in-person qualifier exam. The ES handbook describes it as one 4-hour exam for all four subjects together.
2. The JEE route. If you qualified to appear for JEE Advanced, you can skip the qualifier and join the foundation level directly. See IITM BS through JEE.

How this compares with Data Science

In DS, the direct route is aimed mainly at working professionals and people who already know first year basics. It has two exams, one for each DS diploma, held on end term exam dates, with a fee of Rs 6,000 for General candidates. Full details are in direct entry to the diploma level.

What if you already have a degree?

The ES handbook makes no exception for graduates or working engineers. Even if you have an engineering degree, the handbook says you start at the foundation level. The regular eligibility rule still applies too: you need Physics and Maths in Class 12, or those subjects passed separately through NIOS or an equivalent.

Common questions

Can I use the DS direct diploma entry to get into the ES diploma?

No. The direct admission exams in the DS handbook lead only to the DS Diploma in Programming and Diploma in Data Science. The ES handbook has no direct entry of any kind into its diploma.

Does JEE entry put me in the ES diploma?

No. JEE entry puts you at the start of the foundation level, with a limit of 4 courses in your first term. You start from the foundation level like everyone else.

Will ES add a direct diploma route later?

The handbook does not say. As of the handbook we read, the rule is that all ES students start at the foundation level. Check the official ES website for any change.
